Starcraft (original) noob seeks help

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. I bought the Starcraft Battlechest nine months ago and couldn't really get into it, but with the release of SC2 I'm motivated to give it another try. I've played some humans v. AI comp stomps on BNet and I'm interested in learning more.

My first question, does BNet have a player skill-based matchmaking system for Starcraft? From what I can tell it's just a free-for-all where players can join any game they want.

What's up with all of the games you cannot join because of high latency? Are there really hundreds of people who still play this game on <gasp> dialup?

for the original? no

for SC2 - yes.

also, high latency games could be people downloading porn or just halfway across the world.

play SC1 and BW for the story that sets up SC 2

play SC 2 for multiplayer. skill curve is much less daunting in SC 2

read wikis, play against multiple computers a bit, watch youtube matches for strategies etc, learn weakness/strength of units etc. its all out there ..and of course watch the replays of your ass poundings.

Original B.net not having decent matchmaking is why you go to somewhere like ICCUP instead.

Sounds like I'd better install the ICCUP stuff.

What's really killing me is the latency problem. I have the ports open on my computer and router, but I might not actually be able to open up the ports since my router is behind a DSL modem that I cannot log on to and when I go to check the ports at various testing sites they say they're closed.

Is there a way to have two installations of Starcraft? One for ICCUP and one for BNET?

if you get the "latency of game creator is too high" error, the problem is on their end, not yours. they dont have the ports open. just dont even bother clicking games that have 6 red bars. but if you host and no one ever joins your game, you may be blocking the ports. ask someone to tell u if they can join your game.

Do noobs still play?

I've never played a game of online SC ever. I signed up over at ICCUP and everything is running great, but figure my ass will be handed to me by everyone else in Ladder D. 🙁

iccup is for competitive starcraft, don't think you'll find many noobs there.

I have a bad feeling that the problem is on my end. Various sites say my ports aren't open. I don't think there's anything I can do about it.

I take it that this problem has been fixed in SC2?

DSL can be a tricky thing to handle if the modem is itself a router. In that case, you have two routers that need to be configured: one as WAP, and the other as the router.

Well, for a game that's almost 12 years old, there's probably only a handful of noobs left. Unfortunately, I'm one of them. :\

Yeah, you have to prepare yourself, mentally, for merciless buttrapings.

Now I've seen things from both perspectives--a grizzled pro beating down on noobs (Sins of a Solar Empire) and a total box noob getting thumped by pros, or at least experienced players (Starcraft).

Those tons of matches on bnet with red bars are just "frozen" matches. They tend to accumulate and every now an then (too rarely IMHO) they are removed.

I never played ladder but on normal bnet there still are tons of noobs. But as said I would play the campaign and then move to sc2 and learn MP in sc2 only.
