StarCraft: First Contact

So... is this the beginning of a movie or just a short movie or something? Anyway... Truly that carrier would have been fucking owned in the actual game. 3 battlecruisers vs 1 carrier? Gimmie a break. 😛

I dunno... gantrathor had 800 hp and 500 shields in game, it wasent just any carrier 😛

Awesome vid!

Is it me or was that just poor? Graphically it looked extremely outdated, to the point at which I think the Diablo 2 cinematic was superior. Textures were not impressive at all.

That said, the content was good, solid and intriguing. Where were the Zerg?

I'll be sure to inform them that you express distaste in their fan-made cinematic that they made in their spare time.

Looked really nice. But since when do Carriers have a cannon like that? 😛 Or can crack a planet? 😛 Not to mention 3 battlecruisers would rip a Carrier to shreads 😛

Though it did look really nice 🙂

You're kidding, right?

For a fan-made cinematic that was very good. And Protoss ships are suppose to be smooth and lacking major detail anyway. Did you notice the Terran BCs, backgrounds, terrain, and Terran Marine all had more detailing?

hmm it's nice and all but consider that 3d space scenes, especially ones using an existing universe and design are not that complicated to make. Their is a rule out there for aspiring 3d artists: don't put space sci-fi scenes onto your reel. 🙂
And it looks a bit 1999-ish. It's not bad, it's just not on the same level Blizzard is now. THANK GOD! Otherwise we would need to kick Blizzard's ass.

See Starcraft opening trailer.

Its the damn Gantrithor, a super carrier. It's the flagship of Executor Tassadar, and was the pride of the Protoss fleet.

And guess what, it DID beat a battlecruiser squadron under Edmund Duke on it's own. They didn't make it's capabilities to do that.

Link

However, a handful of heavily armed "super carriers" exist, most famously the Gantrithor. This was the flagship of Executor Tassadar when he led a protoss expeditionary force in its attempts to eradicate the zerg in terran space. The Gantrithor was powerful enough that it single-handedly defeated an entire terran battlecruiser squadron under the command of General Edmund Duke.

Anyway, I knew super carriers can glass planets, but I imagined it more as destroying the surface rather than...cracking it open.

EDIT: Most of this is explained in the backstory, which I skipped at first. I guess others did too.

No one is saying their effort isn't admirable and no one is bashing these guys but what the **** does the fact it's fan made and done in spare time has anything to do with us criticizing the cinematic? If it looks poor then it looks poor, the fact it was done by a 4 year old in 10 minutes doesn't change anything, it's still poor, kudos to the 4-year old but objectively speaking, it's poor.

Because he compared it to the cinematic for Diablo II. Your whole argument falls apart after realizing that.

He's just comparing it to 9-year old cinematics for reference to make a point about outdated graphics, it doesn't matter if they were made for Blizzard, software and hardware today are much more versatile and it's still a valid comparison (beside he's only talking about graphics, not direction or anything), I fail to see how my argument falls apart just there.

Blizzard was worth bazillions even in 2000. Are these guys?

Ok, he directly compared a cinematic trailer from the leading video game development company to that done by fans in their spare time. If he had just said "I've seen better" then yeah, that's true. However, by this same logic, it's like saying "Oh, you only got an SL600? That's trash compared to my SLR Mclaren". No shit it is, the two are on completely different levels.

If you want to be on a level playing field then I'd like to see a different video made by fans of another game that's of this quality. However, I'm sure you're just one of those people who degrades something if it isn't the best of the best, judging by the logic you've shown us.

the video was pretty cool, for the uninitiated, what exactly is 'SC Legacy'? is that a new game or fan content?

No one is degrading anything, I think the cinematic is an awesome effort and great job to these guys, I'm just saying that objectively speaking, this cinematic could be better graphically, even for fan-made content.

I don't see why you have to make it personal, I understand the circumstances of the cinematic and I agree, it's a great effort, but please, can we focus the discussion on the actual cinematic and not on the people who made it?

How would you know? You spend your spare time on AT talking shit. You don't know anything about how this was made.

Do you? How can you be so sure I don't know anything? Can't you give actual arguments instead of flaming me? (out of the blue I might say, you weren't even the poster I quoted).

Why are you making this personal anyways? I haven't ever attacked you or any other poster, the cinematic or the people who made it (in fact I praised them several times); I was just trying to validate a point SOMEONE ELSE made for the sake of discussion.

Well yes, as I was at work I only had the chance to watch the video and did not realise it was a fan made effort.

As a movie, it had good action and held my interest. However as I mentioned, the textures used in space were rather poor and disappointed me.

I made the Diablo 2 comparison based upon my assumption that the movie was made by Blizzard or a related company. In this regard, perhaps the comparison should be made to Freespace 2 in-game textures and movies. It has been about 2 years since my 5th playthrough of Freespace 2 and from what I remember, they could be comparable in texture quality.

The Marine was rather well done as was the Protoss. The big letdown was the quality (or lack of) in the graphical quality of the space action scenes.
