StarCraft: BroodWar Spawn Question

Remember how a person could create a spawn that could only play in games hosted by the person with the main game?

I have been doing that at a friend's house, since I didn't bring my StarCraft discs with me. Can you create a spawn with BroodWar? I thought it could be done, but when I put the BroodWar disc into the drive, it says I need the full version of SC installed, not just a spawn.

Do you have to install the full version of SC then tell it to make a spawn via the BroodWar disc?
 
As of the latest patch neither Starcraft or Broodwar require the CD in the drive. Follow the instructions in the patch notes to set this up.
