Starbucks is going after my favorite coffee shop in Tulsa, OK

My favorite coffee shop (anywhere) is DoubleShot Coffee Company out of Tulsa, and in receiving an email from the owner a few days ago I was saddened to hear that Starbucks has decided to go after them for their name.

For what it's worth, I remember going to DoubleShot before ever hearing (certainly before buying--I had to try it.. once) of Starbucks' Doubleshot. Also, "doubleshot" is just a term we use in espresso; sometimes it shortened to just "double", but it's always in reference to a "doubleshot." It's a term with industry significance and not Starbucks significance.

I'm sure much of ATOT will be divided on this topic, but I'd personally appreciate the support either way. Brian is a solid guy, knows everything about coffee, and has made an excellent effort in offering something notable to consumers. I find dedication to a quality product, especially a somewhat niche product (at least for now; the American palate is demanding more) as coffee, to be something of a rarity when considering how eclipsed these smaller companies tend to be by the corporate giants.

And they really feel that somehow this coffee shop that happens to be named "DoubleShot" is a threat to the $tarbuck$ empire in some way? This is just as bad as the various Monster lawsuits pursued by Monster cable.

Coming into this thread, I expected the coffee shop to be caled Starbucko's Cowboy Coffee or something. I think it's lame that Starbucks is going after Brian because of his shop's name. I hope he beats them.

um, how the heck can they get a trademark on "doubleshot" it's been in common use for like a hundred years.

Sounds pretty retarded. Should sign a big petition letting StarBucks now you won't be going to them any more if they sue the DoubleShot place.

not that they'd care...

If BN was able to acquire a patent on the mouse-click, I'm sure Starbucks can acquire a trademark registration on a doubleshot of espresso. USPTO has really lost it. And to think Einstein used to work for them.

This would be rather easy to defend if the coffee shop owner can show the name of his store predated Starbuck's use of the word for it's nasty canned beverage.

Sadly Starbucks can use their attorneys to drown doubleshot in so much legal work that they won't be able to afford to fight. You can patent/trademark anything, even a term that was being used well before Starbucks was even an idea.

I hate Starbucks. I've seen them drive out some good coffee shops around here over the years. I refuse to drink their over roasted over priced crap.

And didn't they just steal the Starbucks name from Moby Dick?

here's what your friend should do if he can afford it, patent any and every term he can that starbucks uses (all the way down to "restroom" or "bathroom") im sure they have those signs in all of their stores

and then sue them

but seriously couldn't a judge just throw this out of court based on it's stupidity?

Well, I officially won't be buying from Starbucks anymore.

Who's with me?

This is SOP for $tarbucks. Along with opening multiple stores within a couple blocks of a competitor to drive them out of business.

Lucky for Starbuck's, Herman Melville is dead. Although, maybe whoever owns the rights to the original BSG series can take a shot at them.

Umm, no he didn't. He worked for the Swiss patent office, not USPTO.
