I don't even think I have to pay at the starbucks near me...

I'll have to check.

But that's great to hear considering I have elite DSL =)

Why do people pay for starbucks access when practically every other coffee shop I know of is free?

I have basic DSL and pay $1.99/month for AT&T WiFi. This is good news for me.

It should be free anyway. Just one reason I never go there. libraries, Panera Bread, etc all have it for free. But starbucks rapes you for coffee and then does it again for the internet.

Can someone explain this:

There are 54 Starbucks locations in New Mexico. Of those, 35 have wireless hot spots. Albuquerque has 31 stores, 20 of which have hot spots.

Why is that even in the article?

Because it's a BIZjournal article about Albuquerque. Do you even read?

They're usually in "premium" locations without public WiFi, like malls and airports. Greedy bastards!

Most malls around here already have free wifi. Sounds like it's good for business traveler types who suck at scheduling flights and thus always have asinine layovers.

I don't understand how charging people to use their wifi by subscribing to ATT or whatever helps Starbucks in any way. If I had to choose between Starbucks and an independent coffee shop with free wifi, obviously the free wifi makes more sense. Thankfully I don't have to make that decision because I have EVDO from Millenicom for $50 a month and no contract.... $10 more than Tmobile and I assume ATT too. And it works ANYWHERE

Yeah, this is Stupid. Starbucks should go to free WiFi, otherwise they are just making an opening to their competitors. What if McD offers free WiFi? :D

I go to a local coffee shop who only requires that you pay for your coffee to use their wi-fi. To bloody hell with SB and their pay wi-fi.
