I found out way too much about the movie at my last movie. And its not like covering your ears works cuz the fucking volume ensures sound travels right thru your hands.

Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones: 65%

My opinion is more like:
Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace: 15%
Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones: 45%
Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith: 79%

So ya, I agree that critics give them some benefit for some reason. But it's not like these got incredible reviews.

Most of the time I know if I want to spring for a movie in the theater just from the title and maybe reading a blurb or two.

Trailers are fine if they only show a couple tease-scenes but have gotten out of hand lately ... Ragnarok for example they killed like half the movie.

Didn't seem like the cinema-trailer for Last Jedi was nearly as bad in terms of spoilers as the ones on Youtube for example. I know what you mean about the volume though ... I like loud stuff but sometimes its borderline-painful!
 
I just watched Last Jedi and i am having an "oke, that was plain" feeling.
I really did not like the EMO guy. I did not like him in the previous movie and i still do not.
Ben solo was particularly boring as character.

I did like the cute hamster birds called Porgs.
Good for merchandise.

Yeah, i agree. Although i expected something like that. Either shielding by getting into the direct path of the bombs or warp directly into the ship.
Holdo (Laura Dern) really had that hot alien creature vibe that used to exist in starwars and startrek.
She should have been around more...

The emperor was way to arrogant to be the supreme leader.
First he influences everything from great distance and then he let his guard down so easily.
Does not make any sense.

Don't worry about it, so much about Last Jedi doesn't make sense that it doesn't matter.

He was doing a lot at the time, suspending Rey, controlling Kylo's mind and he was overcome with arrogance (as you observed) as he was about to have Kylo kill Rey. Man, you can't concentrate on everything even if you're a supreme leader...

We've seen super weapons blown up by snub fighters on two occasions at this point and they do it again. It's becoming a point of comedy. The First Order are the rebels. But they aren't portrayed that way. How cool would it have been had 7 been about the challenges of going from a hit and run military into a government that works? How cool would it have been for devout imperials to see the destruction of the second death star as an act of terrorism that cost the lives of many of their comrades? Now they're the rebels. Blur the line between rebel and terrorist. It could have been brilliant.

But no. Disney didn't have the balls. They dumbed down what it could have been for the sake of drawing in newer audiences that never saw a Star Wars movie in their life and the film was all the poorer for it. Rey is also way too powerful, using the Force and wielding a lightsaber with skill with basically no training. How cool would it have been for Luke to have made his entrance at the part where Kylo is reaching for a lightsaber with the Force, only for it to fly into the palm of a familiar robotic hand? The camera pans up to reveal Luke's face and the audience would have cheered with applause.

Instead of having Luke make a mind blowing entrance however, they just make Rey god like and have her beat Kylo herself. Luke is relegated to taking off his hood with a blank stare before the credits role. Just meh...

So much wasted potential.

Bravo. It was a waste of my time. Luke literally didn't even need to be in the movie. He was useless IMHO.
 
I'm trying to watch The Last Jedi, I'm about three quarters of an hour in (Luke's just accepted Rey as a student, kinda).

Multiple concerns:

The basic space physics in this film are wrong even by my poor grasp of physics. Space bombers using gravity to drop bombs? Why is the resistance fleet burning fuel by continuing to travel in the same direction at the same velocity? Did someone develop an even worse method of sub-light speed than humanity is even capable of right now?

Did the bombers just appear out of freaking nowhere? They're as slow as fuck, and the dreadnought knew they would be coming because the fighter was clearing out the cannons. Why are they in such close formation to accidentally blow each other up? What's the rest of the Empire's fleet doing? Surely most of the star destroyers would have launched their fighters the moment it looked like there was going to be a fighter-scale battle? One destroyer could have kept theirs in so they could go to light speed at a moment's notice to track the rest of the fleet. Why weren't the destroyers engaging the resistance fleet as well as the dreadnought? It just seemed like the incompetence of the Empire fleet (despite being competent enough to be on the cusp of victory against the resistance) seemed perfectly composed to allow the resistance to escape.

Why is the notion of the fleet being tracked even in hyperspace allegedly a new thing in Star Wars? The writers of this trilogy have borrowed heavily from the original trilogy, yet the conversation between Han and Leia in 'A New Hope' seems to have escaped them: "they're tracking us, it's the only way to explain the ease of our escape". The Falcon went straight to light speed after escaping the Death Star. Even worse, the resistance are complaining that interstellar tracking is a whole new thing even though Rey and Leia/Finn have this paired tracking device kit in the very same film. Why not just take a page out of 'Terminator Salvation' and have the paired device as having a discovered drawback that anyone can potentially track but the resistance leaves it running as it's Rey's only way home?

Is this plot ever going to develop beyond "we need to find three pieces to assemble the sacred macguffin to defeat our foe", e.g. character development, universe-building content?
 
Rian Johnson had idiotic ideas and Kathleen Kennedy supposedly gave him free reign (maybe coz they developed a really close buddy relationship?). If the script had been scrutinized enough through the lens of a few SW fiction authors, it wouldn't have ended up being so bad. There are so many great stories in the SW universe but none of them ever made me question the liberties they took in describing how things worked. TLJ is just something you get when George Lucas wakes up from traumatic brain injury.
 
I've just finished watching it. How is it that the main ship in the resistance fleet can do a suicide run that decimates the Empire fleet and they didn't just do that in the first place instead of "maybe we'll confuse them if we run away some more?". How is it that everyone of consequence (all but one) survived the suicide run (I haven't the foggiest idea how Rey survived btw)? What was the Empire fleet doing while the Falcon was leaving the planet? Or was exactly the amount of fleet left being what ended up on the planet? Were they stranded there?

Another weird issue is how the Empire landed forces on the planet. The rest of the plot hangs on yet another absurd idea that the Empire has big slow ships that can either travel super-slow or they can press the go-fast-light-speed button, and the resistance has faster ships that also have the go-fast button, so therefore at sublight speed the latter will always get away, but somehow the Empire landed the BFG on the planet as well as the rest of their ground forces without an in-between-sized ship that presumably can go as fast as the resistance fleet? Did they find a vast perfectly-flat bit of land to park a star destroyer on?

I wonder if the 'big ship equals slow' idea is once again forgetting that the earthly rules of resistance and gravity don't apply in space? It's the only way I can account for the idea that smaller ships go faster. If anything, the opposite is more likely to be true in space: big engine attached to big ship goes faster.

I'm glad that I was wrong about the sacred macguffin tidying up the plot, I was also sure that repeated disobeying of orders would turn up trumps at the end of the day.

I don't mind funky universe dynamics in fiction, but when the poorly conceived plot relies absolutely on the funky dynamics then they warrant a bit more attention. The entire plot of this film hangs on funky universe dynamics, especially, "oh btw we have cloaking tech, just for the little ships lol" gets thrown into the mix, along with, "oh, we can scan for cloaked ships lol", but completely ignores that if the Empire had destroyed the main ship after the cloaked ships had escaped, then surely the first order (honk) of business for the Empire to check the planet for escape pods etc?

I don't know. I already know about the lame-ass ending, and I only saw 'The Force Awakens' because I picked it up on BR for like 1 or 2 UKP from a bargain bucket at a supermarket (and was disappointed), and last night I just 'got the urge' to watch TLJ. Two and a half freaking hours, so poorly filled. I'd class TLJ as a little worse than TFA, so I'd assume that RoS will be worse than TLJ.

I think the levels of boredom / need for no-brain content would have to such such a peak that I'd also be watching Ghost in the Shell 2017, The Hobbit trilogy and the Sherlock Holmes Guy Ritchie movies despite knowing I'll hate them. I'm too old to waste my time like this.
 
I found RoS to be better than TLJ. Yes, there were inconsistencies in it but at least, not as bad as TLJ. And Disney wanted to destroy J.J. Abrams reputation coz he signed up for a multimillion dollar deal with a competitor so he was forced to reshoot to satisfy the executives.

These are not unwatchable. I would score them all at around 6.5 out of 10.

Only watched it once in the theater. There is much to like about last Jedi and as much of not more to irritate you. Light saber battles were spot on, cameo appearances were a nice touch, speed of travel seemed really wrong, speed of plot even more so.
 
I just checked JJ's IMDB page. I think maybe the RoS experience took a really bad emotional toll on him. No movie directed since 2019 and now he will be directing TV series.

He's formulaic and predictable. Heck man, Alias was an early hit. As usual...started off great but the MacGuffin chase never ended in a compelling manner.

Star Wars was the equivalent of Beethoven's Eroica Symphony(especially the last movement) for modern people.

I would say the movie TLJ might have been a okay non-franchise film about workplace politics and incompetence, and some political drama. The problem is trying to literally replicate "external circumstances" like the original films as if those circumstances made the movie great.

I would say far from "empowering women", it's more of a "just because it's a woman doesn't mean she also can't be a piece of shit in a position of power"; which actually is a realistic lesson.

It's also very boring.

It just goes to say only George Lucas has the ability to conceptualize the world into an convincing text. He's not a good editor....but reading the story on the wiki, the Lucas Star Wars, even the prequels...have this "sense" to them the Disney ones do not.
 
TFA(7) was ok but oh boy did TLJ(8) disapoint me, i've yet to see the last one they released because 8 sucked so bad.....also wasn't a fan of Solo or any of the tv shows (haven't seen the newest one yet though). The only one i thought that was up there with the originals is Rogue One
 
This is fake Star Wars IMO. The real Star Wars after RotJ was called non canon by Disney. Disney just steals from the real Star Wars. There was no First Order, but there was a New Republic, as well as Imperial Remnant, as well as various ex-Imperial Warlords. Examples being Ardus Kaine of the Pentastar Alignment, and Zsinj of the Zsinj Empire.
