This laptop is good enough for people that don't know about Anandtech.

It's not adequate for gaming in it's current configuration. A gaming capable laptop needs a quad core CPU, 8GB RAM and a laptop video card performing comparable to a desktop 760.

The problem is that you can't upgrade it so that it's gaming capable. You have a powerful enough CPU and enough RAM but there is no way to upgrade the GPU in that laptop which is the most critical portion. Minimum amount to spend on a gaming laptop is going to depend on what games you want to play along with how much eye candy you want to play with.

Is it this one?

http://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/star-wars-special-edition-notebook---15-an050nr-(energy-star)

It looks cool but it's deceiving people with it's "gaming" vibe.

This one is more gaming capable and a $100 cheaper and I think it has an SSD, much faster than mechanical drives: http://flash.newegg.com/Product/N82E16834232793

A truly capable gaming laptop was on sale for the same price you paid for your laptop, it's price went back up: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ..._GE_Series_GE62_Apache-_-34-152-903-_-Product

If you insist on budget laptop gaming and return the one you have, give the Asus I linked a closer look.

so can i play games that are out now for ps4/xb1

Not really. There are a few that it may run at absolute lowest settings, but it would not be enjoyable.

When it comes to laptops, the majority of them are not good for gaming at all. The ones that are fall into two fields. Really high end machines that cost a big chunk of cash (over $2k), and AMD based systems with APU's that run games acceptably at lower resolutions.

The laptop you got looks really cool, and should be a great machine for daily tasks. But gaming will not be one of them :/

If you REALLY want to game, return that machine and two one of two things. Build a desktop machine that for that cost would run most games fine at medium to high settings (at 1080P), or buy a laptop such as the one listed above.

If you got it for gaming, then, about the only games you will be able to play at an acceptable frame rate is some really old stuff, or some web based games.

That integrated GPU just doesn't have enough horsepower to drive today's games at an acceptable frame rate with all the bells & whistles on, heck, even with most everything off, the GPU is subpar for lots of games at 1080p.
You may find some games playable at below 720p resolution, but it will still struggle to get decent frame rates.

This is why you ask here in the forum first, then go out and buy.
If possible, I would return it, and get something better, like the ones already mentioned.

The 510 is slower than the 4400 in my temporary laptop. I can sort of run Fallout 4, but everything on low 720p gives me about 15fps.

Skyrim at medium gives 20-25fps at 1366x768.

I have a Core i3 4030u and 8gb ram.

That's not really true... My past two gaming laptops have both been either at or under $1000 (Intel and Nvidia). The ASUS ROG laptops are solid bang for your buck and MSI has some good options too. There were laptops on sale Cyber Monday that would run most of the latest games at 1080p for around $800. Most of these were Intel systems with Nvidia mobile graphics cards. You just have to shop around for a bit, but if you're spending much less than 800 or 900 you probably aren't getting a good gaming machine.

A woman at work asked about this 2 days ago for her son. His gaming needs were not huge, but I did recommend that she upgrade to the Nvidia GTX 940M. It supplies a bit more "oomph" graphically, but it still may not handle AAA titles on anything much more than low/medium. The option was available however to upgrade on the HP site.
