Star Wars Old Republic - Dumb Question

So I have never played a MMO game. I started reading about the new Star Wars game and it seem like it costs $15 per month. Is that right?

$60 for the game (includes 1 month) + 165 (11 months)

That would be well over $200 for a year. Am I missing something? I would like to give it a shot, but I don't know if I play enough to justify that type of cost.
🙂

What happens if you don't renew, but then want to start again later - Do you lose your progress?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Pretty much so. There's a 3 month and 6 month subscription that knocks a couple of bucks of the cost if you pay in advance.

When you buy the game you get a 'free' 30 day trial.

You don't lose your progress, if you cancel your subscription they basically freeze your account till you come back.

Thats how most mmos work. You pay to play them, and in return they give you additional content over an extended period of time.

concerning the cost, think of it as one night less night a month you dont go out for drinks. except, instead of only being able to play for just a couple of hours for that one day, you get to play any time, as much as you want, all month.

of course, if you are too young to drink or not social, what i said probably wont apply

wait for GW2.

cheaper to enter, no monthly sub, better eye candy...and probably better gameplay overall.

best of all worlds.

Almost all star wars games suck, if this game is anything like clone wars it's going to be horrible. What is the consensus of this game from the Beta guys is it decent or only for fan boys of world of warcraft? I love star wars but hated World of Warcraft, do you think a similar game like this change my opinion?

also, the game on Origin costs $80, at walmart $60 (I'm in Canada) any difference?

1. the game is very decent and not horrible.

2. the $80 version is the digital deluxe download only, which includes some useless stuff and a hoverbike you can use at lvl 25.

You're thinking of Star Trek games, which mostly suck. The Star Wars side has had a number of really good titles over the years.

I like the Star Wars Old Republic but I like these type of games. Sorry but most star wars games do not suck. Back in the day Dark Forces was bad ass and Lego star wars is good. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was one of the best ever.

If you hate World of Warcraft, you won't like this game.

If you liked KOTOR 1 -2 enough to have paid $60 for them there's a good chance you'll enjoy TOR. At least for the first 6 hours I've played it feels like a Bioware RPG, even though my character doesn't have amnesia.

If 1-2 were only $10 games for you, then wait 6-12 months for a discount or free trial.

Let's just say that You can easily play 2000 hours or more of an MMO per year.

Break that down into new release average game time of 40-50 hours and your bang per buck is really good w\ the MMO.

That is if TOR doesn't go away in a few months.

A night of drinks? 15 bucks is essentially 2 drinks where I live... not even.

hell an adult movie ticket is essentially 14 bucks a movie now...

the cost of the game is not the problem, it's managing your relationships after getting the game that's hard.

It really depends on your tastes. Oddly enough I grew quite tired of WoW after a while, even though I shelled out the bucks for the collector's edition, and no longer play it at all. This game on the other hand I see as a game that will keep my attention longer for the simple reason of immersion factor. Unlike most, if not all, MMOs the voice acting is present throughout the entire game. So instead of having a popup box come up each time you start a quest you have an in depth conversation. Oh and this is good voice acting which helps as well. It's not on the same level as say Batman Arkham City/Arkham Asylum but it's still pretty good.

This and the fact I feel morally invested with my character, based on the choices I need to make, are what keep me invested. So far anyway, we will see how it goes.

Try looking at it from this angle, if you buy it and play it for a montg and decide not to continue you still would likely have gotten more hours out of it than your average single player game. If you decide to keep playing, then its your option. On the flip side, if you decide you dont like it thats just a risk with any game. Thats assuming you can afford it but dont want to pay out monthly.

If $15 a month will break you then just walk away.

Personally, if you are on the fence about the game, then wait. Wait a couple of months where the reviews comes out, when bugs are ironed out, when people hit endgame where that is where most people will spending their time if they're around for a long time. Only then will you get a clearer picture of the game on whether you will like it or not in the long run.
