Star Wars: Empire at War

Something has been missing from the few Star Wars strategy games that have come out on the PC: the fun. OK, that's a little harsh, but there's no denying that these games have not let you feel like you're a part of the movies, a part of some massive interstellar civil war. That's about to change with Star Wars: Empire at War. Set in the period after the upcoming Episode III: Revenge of the Sith film and just before Episode IV: A New Hope, the game will feature the battle for control of the galaxy. Star destroyers will burn in orbit. AT-ATs will crush Rebel forces on the ground below. And it will all happen at the same time, in a persistent universe.

I have always liked the idea of a GOOD SW RTS. But, with the advent of one particular, delicious RTS coming out from MS.....I dont know about this one. What do you guys think?

"Nobody wants to see a droid chopping down trees to build a base," laughs Tosti. "In most RTS games out right now, you spend 80 percent of your time gathering resources to build up some megaforce. You battle this megaforce, and the outcome is simply determined by sheer numbers and how quickly you gathered rocks and lumber."

They sound like idiots. RTS gamers want BOTH exciting tactical combat and resource gathering. ES, the masters of the RTS, understand this fully and are implementing even more complex resource management in AoE III. I'd have been sick of R:TW in a matter of days if it weren't for the turn-based aspect.

And the screenshots look like C&C Generals. Bleh.

Only a couple star wars related games ever excited me. This one isn't one of them. Looks ok, but there are enough ok games out there. A star wars theme doesn't make it a bigger seller for me, I hate star wars 😛

Isn't SW: KoTOR considered the best SW RTS so far? *
(?)

KoTOR II is due Feb 8.

And - speaking of SW - Jedi Knight II: JO is AWESOME for a FPS . . . . i just got it last week and can't stop playing it (the lightsaber and "force" attacks are brilliant) . . . .

* edit: or is KoTOR considered RPG? 😱

KOTOR is an RPG....yes.

Never played KOTOR but I don't see why it couldn't be the best RPG star wars game... I've never seen any others.

There were only 3 games with a star wars theme that I liked. Empire Strikes Back for the Atari, Jedi Knight II: JO, and X-Wing vs Tie Fighter.

malak,
kotor is one of the best rpg games ever, definetly the best since fallout2 and fallout2 is really really old

has little to do with that its based in the star wars universe, its simply a good game 🙂

If it's well done and not another lucasarts fvcking joke of a game, then it will be good. Westwood has a history of kickass RTS games, so there is definitely hope.

we could go on and on...but Star Wars Rebellion was supposed to be a kickass star wars RTS...while it was a great game for battling friends(yes, it is a good game if you get down to it) and then there was starwars battlegrounds...nope, and i know im forgetting 2 or 3 other attempts but they were HORRID...i'd like to see a mod for Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War with SW units, that could be very well done.
