Star Wars: Classic or not? [update: also tell your definition of classic!]

Me and my roomate were talking about this somehow and we were arguing wether or not "Star Wars" would classify as a classic (the original 3). I argued yes, because it has penetrated out society in terms of random lines( "luke, i am your father" and "may the force be with you" etc) influenced almost every movie after its time amongst other things.

My roomate doesn't think its a classic because the current generation may have trouble enjoying it now, and i do agree, but i dont think that should prevent it from being called a "classic".

What do you guys thing? Poll should be up and back up your thoughts! And what is your definition of Classic?

Star Wars is as classic as Gone with the Wind. It has a huge fan base, the original movies still bring in merchandising revenues, and yes we still speak lines from the movie. The story is also a timeless one, good vs. evil, young boy makes good and gets the girl, etc..

I personally have never seen Gone with the Wind. But I recognize the actors, much of the dialogue, and would not hesitate to recognize it as a classic film for it's importance in our culture.

Star Wars is a classic. There shouldn't even be a question about it.

EDIT:

Classic for me means something from the past that is still recognized as great. In other words, an oldie but a goodie.
Cars, music, movies, there are tons of examples that are held up today as classics. Look at stuff like Gone With The Wind, a Ford from the 50's or 60's, or the Beatles. All examples of stuff that still has respect and fans today....

My nephew is 9 and he loves the old series. He differs from me in that he likes the new ones too.:disgust: That to me is the sign of a classic.

I started a thread once contending that, "I am your father" is the most famous movie line ever. Alotta people didn't agree, although it is definitely among the top 5. Star wars IS a classic.

Too bad Lucas butchered the prequels.

Just because something is considered a classic DOES NOT mean that is crosses generational boundaries well. Gone with the Wind is considered a classic, but I can't stand to watch that crap.

What makes you think someone would have trouble enjoying it now? I watch it all the time. That's why it's such anincredible movie is it's timeless and no matter how old you are when you see it, it still rocks. It takes place in space so it's not an era movie like it takes place in the 70s or 80s or whatever. Anyoen could watch it today never having seen it before and they'd like it.

Usually when someone calls something a "classic" it means they like it or it means something to them. The woman I dated in college thought Star Wars was a lame piece of crap.......
