Star Wars Bonus DVD vs. Modded Xbox

I dont even understand how this can be legal.
I have a modded xbox AND a COPY of the DVD extras... I saw this on xbox-scene earlier and my jaw dropped. I just don't get it.

Does this affect people who have switches installed? Say, for instance, I just boot to the regular dash with the chip disabled and watch the DVD? Will I still be able to boot to Evox with my chip enabled later?

Didn't the Beastie Boys have something like that on their newer album? I think only the EU copies were effected though.

That was just copy protection, nothing to do with the XBOX. BTW, the Polyphonic Spree has some strange copy protection on their new disc as well.

you should be able to. i believe with the newer chips with switches, after the x2 chip was out there, the bios on these chips would look for a different named dash file when the chip is enabled, meaning when the chip is disabled it looks for the default dash. (ie. when chip is enabled, it looks for evox.xbe, and when the chip is disabled it looks for xboxdash.xbe, or similiar names).

but i think that if you have an older chip, like an x1, its a little more difficult. with the x1, it always looks for the xboxdash.xbe, or some default one. i know this is the problem because i updated my dash with ninja gaiden on accident, and I had a fun time figuring out how to re upload the evox dash to my xbox. i finally figured it out though. i don't remember exactly though because all of this was a while ago, like when ninja gaiden first came out.

Meh, it's not some evil plot. Is it rather dudious to upgrade the softweare on someone's box without their permission, well yeah, but there are many games that will do this if you try to launch an Xbox Live portion of a game. It's happened to my friends modded xbox several times because seomone accidently went into the wrong part of a game. (I belive Project Gotham Racing 2 automatially upgrades the dash when you try to get onto Live)

wouldnt the DVD be looking for msdash.xbe regardless of what OS/xbe you booted into? most people still keep their retail drive/dash untouched to use LIVE etc (hence the switch in the first place). It would just be searching for the retail files and if found would update... switch or no switch.

Games do it sure... especially when those games are being played on a modded xbox and you try to access LIVE which REQUIRES a retial game. This is to be expected as MS does not allow the modding of the Xboxs period (I still dont get how they can do that as its MY xbox I can use it for whatever purpose I want... mod != illegal activites) if I recall, it does however ban your EEPROM from LIVE (experience speaking here).

But DVD not associated with MS in any way? Thats simply evil. WTF right does Lucas Arts have in CHANGING my property? Will the next box set change auto update my TV to only black and white pictures? Gimme a break this just isn't right.

Explain to me how this isn't "owning" my stuff?
I OWN the retail DVDs for the trilogy.
I OWN my XBox and modded it to easily stream personally ripped music, jpgs and personally ripped DVDs/home movies etc from my server to my entertainment center.

Why does LA not understand that I OWN these things and that THEY shouldn't be tampering with my property?

blah, an update to the dashboard, I'm assuming the EEPROM as well, bans you from xbox live. But who cares since there is xbconnect and plus it's free.

Actually while you may own the hardware you do not own the software. So they can update or change it whenever they want.

same with the DVD. You do not own the movie or information ON the DVD. you just own the dvd itself.

this has been brought up in the courts a few times. usually with modding game systems.

I'm talking about the DVD publishers updating your hardware without asking. Spyware installing itself without asking. That sort of thing.

Edit: and the push to make modding your hardware illegal.

no kidding.... I've softmodded numerous xboxen just to run XBMC and some modified Halo games (Halo NMP 1.1, Halo NMP 2.0, Halo CXE)... many uses besides piracy.

what's more intriguing is having a video format UDF disc running XBE's instead of a normal GDF ISO. This may lead to the discovery of more exploits in the future.

edit: i see what mean now, Demon.
