...how can you totally hate a movie when it has stuff like this in it?:

Kirk gazes fondly at Enterprise.

KIRK
"... and all I ask is a tall ship and
a star to steer by."

McCOY
Melville.

SPOCK
John Masefield.

McCOY
Are you sure about that?

SPOCK
I am well-versed in the classics, Dr.

McCOY
(cantankerous)
Then how come you don't know "Row Your
Boat?"

Spock raises an eyebrow.

yeah, the original STAR TREK on tv was pretty terrible. i'm not sure if it's a comedy or what not... and this comes from a person who's seen every episode and movie of every star trek (including enterprise) except TOS on tv.

it's UNwatchable!

Was that the one where they cut gravity on the ship? More space/sci-fi movies need to do that...it's not terribly realistic where the ship is blowing up, power is cut, life support is out but gravity still works.

That was Star Trek VI, The Undiscovered Country.

Star Tek 5 is the last movie that was half-decent IMO & a lot of that is due to some fantastic quotable lines.

Kirk: Excuse me, but what does GOD need with a starship?!?

I disagree. Of all the OST Movies V was the least desirable for me. I liked VI better than V.

For me it goes. II>III>IV>VI>V>I

Not nearly as realistic as the fact that the ship accelerates from 0 to 100 times the speed of light in a split second and the crew feel no acceleration effects.

But yeah, that was ST:VI as noted.

BAN!

TOS was the best! Not just groundbreaking sci-fi for its time, but groundbreaking TV period. The movies, however, were a mixed bag. I'm torn between whether 4 or 5 was the worst. 2 and 6 were great though.

My biggest problem with VI was that it didn't "work" ... its been quite awhile since I've seen VI but as I recall there were many holes in the story.

yup, sounds like some whippersnappers who didn't have to grow up with Atari and Intellivision and don't appreciate what it took to get sci fi tv/movies it where it is today...

It had discontinuities to the ST Universe, but the story itself was mostly consistent.

My list would go II>VI>III>I>IV>V

IV and V were just steaming piles of dog crap. I don't know which is worse. "Captain, there be whales here!" (along with all the other horrific acting and scripting in IV, especially in the dialogue between Shatner and Catherine Hicks) or a sci-fi movie about searching for God and determining that God doesn't exist because you found the devil.

I was 13 when VI came out, so I am not sure of what inconsistances were going on. CaptanTE can you explain further why "It didn't work"?

For some reason I really liked IV. It could just be becasue I like time travel storylines. And it put the crew in a fish-outta-water (no pun intended) situation. But thinking back. It was a really odd storyline to need to bring whales from the past in order to talk to an alien vessel.
