How do people walk around a simulation without smacking into walls all the time? I mean it's a small room... how can you go for a jog for a few miles in a straight line?

In USS Enterprise holo decks you for asking such questions.

those walls are basically matrix, or the walls can move on demand... possibilities are endless or lets just say, the sky is the limit...

although the ones built by Hirogens were really really vast so I am sure the size of the room is a factor..

The simulator room is round and rotates around you like a hamster ball. I know it looks rectangular, but that's just a projection.

I think that you walk to the wall, then you're sense of what direction you are walking in changes so you turn without realising.

This, another good point, the room could be spherical as gravity is not a concern

Better yet... since all the answers so far revolve around an individual... what about TWO individuals walking AWAY from each other?

The thing is though, where two people are in relation to each other is dependant on the holograms so two people could be walking in the same direction as each other but the holograms would make them feel as though they are walking in opposite direction

And 20 people?

Wait, even while the simulation is running, one can "touch" the holodeck walls. They did it many times.

Besides, why would anyone go in there to walk around? Everyone knows they are about the sex...the unlimited possibilities of sex.

actually this was a big problem during filming. of course it wouldnt be feasible to use the real holodeck for filming, because then the cameras would also move at the same time as the actors and therefore the perspectives wouldnt be correct. so instead they just went outside andfilmedtheshowINTHEREALWORLDOMFGAREYOUKIDDINGME???

If it can project solid hologram I just assumed that it projected a solid hologram on the ground. It then kept the person within the walls of the deck by moving the ground under the user;

In order to create a sense of distance between two people walking away a hologram between the two people, showing them getting further away, would at some point be a requirement.

You know, before I answer any more questions there's something I wanted to say. Having received all your letters over the years, and I've spoken to many of you, and some of you have traveled... y'know... hundreds of miles to be here, I'd just like to say... GET A LIFE, will you people? I mean, for crying out loud, it's just a TV show! I mean, look at you, look at the way you're dressed! You've turned an enjoyable little job, that I did as a lark for a few years, into a COLOSSAL WASTE OF TIME!

I think it had something to do with forcefields and you would be walking but not moving.

Yeah pretty much, you're on a treadmill that only makes it feel like you're moving.

When there are multiple people in the holodeck, each person gets their own virtual "compartment" if you will, a box made out of force fields they stand inside onto which images are projected to give the illusion of seeing a great distance.

I'm not sure how it's possible to touch the edge of the holodeck if it's programmed to keep the simulation as perfect as possible, but whatever. Also in the first episode of Next Gen, Riker throws a rock and it hits the wall. You'd expect that the rock was actually holographic and the computer would make it look like it kept going, but again it's just a show and there are some inconsistencies.

Also, the holodeck will replicate certain things that you interact with more directly in order to make things more realistic. If you eat something on the holodeck, rather than it just disappearing from your stomach when you leave, it replicates a piece of food instead. Or when Wesley fell into the water he stayed wet because it was replicated water.

simulating the ground would be trivial if you could generate full humanoids with mass:p
