From the title I thought that it meant a Star Trek movie/series set in the year 2008. I was like... WTF

I heard they're going to do Kirk and Spock in Starfleet Academy. Could have some glint of hope to it.

Kirk and Spock during their youth and entrance to Starfleet academy (around 2240ish, 15 or 20 years before The Original Series).

Matt Damon is apparently the most likely candidate to play young Kirk, which I find a bit silly since Damon is already older than Shatner was when he started playing Kirk (and Kirk was already captain of the Enterprise by then!!).

I am no trekkie but I do like Star Trek, and after the mixed results they had with Enterprise and the last Trek flick, I think they ought to let the series rest for a few years, but it seems the lure of a retro-prequel is too strong for the producers to resist.

EDIT: Fritzo beat me to it :p

Which is another glaring inconsistancy. Spock was supposed to have served under Captain Pike before Kirk took command. They didn't know each other before that.

"Another" inconsistancy? Star Trek doesn't have any inconsistancies.

Meh...Star Trek used to be relatively consistent until Enterprise; now it's all gone down the drain and anything goes, apparently.

Kirk is going to end up being Spock's brother, Picard's father and Archer's grandson

Some of you guys are way too anal about startrek.

Suspension of disbelief is your friend and don't get too hung up on a few inconsistancies. It's science fiction. It's just entertainment.

I personally welcome the return of star trek. I just hope that the movie is better than the last one, which was just terrible. If they have a new series I hope they have more patience. I think they gave up on enterprise way too easily.

Now let the star trek vs BSG vs SG-x thread wars begin.

God, I hate what they did to Star Trek with Enterprise :|

I would like to see a prequel involving Kirk and Spock at the Academy, but they couldn't be know each other and should be kept apart.

And Matt Damon? Whoever's in charge of casting should be shot for even suggesting that he could even begin to fill Shatner's shoes.

They'd need to go with unknown actors for the main characters.

I think they should have Richard Simmons as Kirk before they have Matt Damon.

Matt Damon's best role was in Team America. He has no business being in Star Trek. It would completely ruin star trek and would completely ruin the borne identity movies. I'll really have to practice my suspension of disbelief....

I think they need to NOT do a prequel, but do something that follows the existing canon. And they should NOT let Brannon/Braga do it, because they'll make it suck, as usual.

Keep deluding yourself thinking that.

There were more contradictions and inconsistencies within TNG than any other series.

TNG had some good moments, but for the most part, it sucked.

We need Jackson, Cameron, Spielberg, and Scorcesse to jointly do a Star Trek movie. It would be 7 hours long, epic in its battles, and everyone would die.

You forgot Jerry Bruckheimer, for the cool explosions :)
