Star Office, didn't it used to be free?

I have a question. Didn't Star Office used to be free? I seem to remember installing it on my Linux box without having to pay anything. Now I'm trying to get it under Windows and I can't find a way to get it from Sun without paying. Any thoughts?

yep it was free before... I installed it under win2k, but it crashes sometimes so I uninstalled it...

i dont think its free anymroe cuz they discontinued the product or something.

No Sun just started charging for StarOffice 6. You can still get OpenOffice 1 for free though, which is almost the exact same thing. StarOffice is to OpenOffice as Netscape is to Mozilla...

Win2k kept crashing for me, so I uninstalled it. 🙂

OpenOffice is StarOffice. Sun found that corporate would rather pay for software than get it free, since 'free' is often equated with 'poor quality' in the eyes of corporate decision makers. To grand a foothold in the market, they released Office6 as a retail product and released the code - and worked with developers - on the product that became openoffice 1.0.
