Star Office 7 at $29.99 AR at CompUSA

If you want to try something I use thats similiar, try 602PC Suite 4.0. its a great program thats compatible with the more expensive spin offs.

I've never been able to get OpenOffice to work on my Win 2K machine. Is there any reason to think Star Office will do better?

that's why its called OPEN office, u have it to sit there and watch it open up.... it never worked on my machine, literally would sit at the opening screen then crash
 
Never had any problems with OpenOffice (other than startup speed) on ME, Win2K or XP. Imports most simpler excel sheets and word docs with no probs. As someone mentioned above, its almost identical to StarOffice and the price is hard to beat. Unless you have to download it from a dial up connection, in which case, you may just want to beat yourself. 😛 😉

If you really want StarOffice (over OpenOffice), you can probably still find older free versions around (like 5.2, just google it). Otherwise, you might be able to find OEM versions around cheaper (not sure about V.7). Still, $29 AR is not too bad for a moderately functional office suite.

That's exactly what happens on my machine. So I'm not alone. 😀
 
I tried eval version of this one yesterday, and I cannot really recommend this for compatibility problem.
I mean, each program (document, spread sheet, presentaion)works fine (quick and has enough functions), but when I tried to import from word documents, they messed up format a little bit.
So, if you can just forget about using Microsoft Office Suite and if you want perfect portability between Windows and Linux (installs on both OS w/o any problem), this product is a very good alternative.
Otherwise, stick to Microsoft stuff, which most of us have to sadly.
 
I like star office 7.
5.2 sucked big time, 6.0 was mediocre. 7.0 is actually pretty good.
I am not a hardcore office user, but I've made all sorts of documents on star office from letters to presentations to drawings.
