Installed StarOffice 6.0 a few minutes ago.

It is like having M$ Office on linux plus a lot more. Open/Write Word/Excel/PP files, insert OLE object, Math formulas, Video clips.
How about running Visual Basic macros? Would you liketo draw graphs, make presentations? You have it all.
The only thing that is missing is Outlook, but you can install Evolution from Ximian and even read email form M$ Exchange. What else do you need?

It is great. What can I say... Who said Linux is not a good desktop OS ?

All it needs to do is handle Access databases and then maybe management will finally listen to Linux.

So what's your point ? I don't mind paying for good Linux software. Also I still will get to have KDE 3 which is shipping with SuSe 8.0 anyways. :p

He can always install it later. That's the whole idea behind linux - one can choose what he wants to be installed :)

There are several options here:

1. You can download StarOffice from Mandrake Website. Yo have to become silver member though. Star Office isn't free for Mandrake - so it makes sense.

2. You can wait for a few days when CDs will hit the stores (online and offline). I ordered my copy already.

3. Ask your friends or browse around - there are probably a few copies somewhere on the Internet.

My only point is that since SuSE Linux 8.0 is shipping in a few weeks, they should sign an OEM deal w/ Sun to get it into the Pro distribution.

Gotta agree with Manly there...wtf with this 5.2 stuff?! For $80.00...show us the money. But whatever...I'll buy it separate.

Well go tell it to them then. I'll still buy 8.0 with or with-out SO 6.0 since it's not a deal breaker for me.

Nice. Do you know if it reads and writes RTF files?

It can read and write to RTF, Doc, XLS, PPt 95/98/2000/XP and a bunch of others (like XML).

But:

There is no guarantee that your file will look 100% like on your M$ Office (same document can look different on different versions of M$ office. There is no way Sun can fix M$ bugs :) ). Although I went through some files and they look pretty good.

No MS Access databases (there is mysql+php) and outlook (there is evolution from Ximian).

When will it be released?
http://www.sun.com/software/star/staroffice/6.0beta/get.html
What does it do?
http://www.sun.com/software/star/staroffice/6.0beta/details.html
What's the home page?
http://www.sun.com/staroffice/
Where can I download it?
http://www.sun.com/software/star/staroffice/5.2/get/get.html
You just have to be a member to d.l it for free... and it's free to be a member... You can only d.l the Chinese Beta from Sun, but StarOffice 6.0 should be coming out real soon for download. You can download 5.2 in the mean time (for those of you who don't have it). It's about 80MB depending on the OS your d.ling it for...

Star Office 6 Final is available already. It probably went platinum and Sun printing a bunch of CDs, that's why there is no info on website. They will post something in a few days.

In the meantime, you can download a copy from Mandrake website. It is not free though.

Yeah, but I'm more than happy to wait a week or two so that I don't have to pay for it... I especially hate paying for things I download...
Here's a link to StarOffice6.0 on MandrakeSoft's site...
