Does anyone else have nostalgic memories of having played an old strategy game called Star Fleet I: The War Begins? In this old ASCII game you controlled a capital warship and had to defeat swarms of smaller enemy ships. It was part simulation and part strategy game. You had to allocate energy to shields and weapons, repair damaged ship systems, defend your starbases, and return to them to refuel all while having to accomplish a mission within a specified time limit.

It was very challenging at the higher difficulty levels and I have fond memories of it though it wouldn't really hold my attention today (since I mostly play online multiplayer exclusively).

The game led to a sequel (that I never played since my then computer couldn't handle it) called Star Fleet II: Krellan Commander and the same company eventually released an excellent 4X strategy game called Empire (Wargame of the Century) and later Empire Deluxe (which you can find at the Underdogs site). The Wikipedia page is here:

I have a soft spot for Empire, too. Before Civilization...there was...Empire... Wikipedia entry for Empire is available here:

I also have fond memories of that game, my Dad bought it for his brand new 286 when I was a kid. :) I made it all the way up to Admiral, I think. Can't remember the exact rankings. I ran across a copy of the game a few months ago but only the first few missions worked right under DOSBox, after that it crashed. I should probably fire up a DOS VM and see if I can get it working again.

I still have a bunch of games from the era, what's the difference between the two?
