Repeatedly in fact, as they keep making builds to be ready for it.
The ironic part is despite the widely known strategy of building rigs/buying GPUs to future-proof for Half Life 2 or Unreal Engine games and seeing soooooo many games being delayed over the years, it's shocking how many people have been trying to 'future-proof' for Star Citizen and now it seems the game won't even be out until 2017 (?). I remember people trying to future-proof for this title even when HD7970/GTX680 were top-of-the-line cards.
I'll give a personal real world example. I bought my $280 8800GTS 320MB in
2007, with the intention of using it for Starcraft 2. By the time SC2 Wings of Liberty came out July 27, 2010, on July 15, 2010, I purchased a pair of GTX470s for $210 a piece.
A single stock GTX470 was 5.2X faster than an 8800GTS 640MB in that game. :awe:
There are so many examples I can think of games that took forever to come out like The Witcher 3, Project CARS, etc.
It's still great to see more developers embracing DX12 since it's basically free performance on top of the inefficient DX11. That extra performance can be translated to a superior gaming experience and/or even better graphics/effects.
Still, based on what I briefly read, if SC is slated for 2017, by that time we might even have the Big Daddy Pascal chip and possibly > 80% of the performance of a 980Ti. Makes it pretty pointless/wasteful to try to upgrade for SC right now.
