This games is going to be the biggest kickstarter clusterf**k for a very long time. I'm glad I never bought any ships. The feature creep started to smell like a fiasco. I can't believe that idiot decided to add an entire FPS section to a space combat simulator

It's really disappointing. I wanted a good space sim with a story component.

He focused on FPS (boarding) early on in the Crowd Funding at the $3.5 million stretch goal:

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/12777-35-Million-Unlock

Boarding Information
As promised, we’d like to share the internal concept for ship-to-ship docking and boarding concept. Please note that this is the very early pitch—some details may change as we balance the game and build out/expand the mechanic!
Boarding Mechanics
The goal is to develop a system where player-to-player boarding is an occasional reward rather than something that becomes the focus of the game; we’re not building Grand Theft Starship. As such, we need a high cost of entry: players must dedicate both significant resources and skill to be able to put themselves in a position to board in the first place.

$4.0 million Level Additions

  • Melee & Heavy Weapons
  • Zero-gravity Simulation
  • Suit HUD Options
  • Increased Customization
  • Outside-the-ship combat (magnetic boots on a hull; think Moonraker)

And? So, this goal that will never be completed was published early, so what? Besides the boarding mechanics for space being stupid (yeah, let's depressurize the hull of a space ship!), this added a level of complexity that was inevitably cause huge problems.

that was at 4 mill. he had already gotten enough to do what he said he was going to do. He then changed everything he said he was going to do on us early backers.

If I were you, I'd have already put in an FTC claim against them. Might as well try to get your money back while there is a company to get it back from.

To summarize the article, the author loudly proclaims over and over that he's the first to make an all-encompassing game. He says that because he couldn't do it, nobody can so SC will fail, and he repeatedly advertises his current project, even featuring screenshots of it throughout the article.

While he did have some valid points, honestly that's exactly how I read it as well.

Do you even know Derek Smart is and why his opinion is worthless?

LOOOOOOL Derek Smart.

There's a reason why the Freespace community (rightly) went up in arms when there were rumors he was planning to grab the IP.

But it's on the Internet! That automatically makes it true.

how you guys feel about Derek Smart is exactly how you are going to feel about croberts in about 5 years ;)

Also derek smart talks about his games because he did try to make the everything impossible game... he even has it up on steam... for you all to play... and its free.

I think his opinion on this subject is worth a lot considering he went down this road.

Now that's neat. Did they post what software they're using? I don't recall an API being made available as of yet although I believe its planned. I see the first one was done with Roccat Power Grid. The second one looks more than what Roccat can do.

There is a thread here on SC's Forum detailing a tablet project. I havent been following it lately but players are using Roccat software too and doing some amazing stuff.

Just managing my power on my ship using a tablet would be priceless.

ok man. How many years will you give croberts before you start to question?

Ive waited 21 YEARS since my last time playing Wing Commander (Privateer too). Up until 2012... I never even DREAMED this project would ever happen. I never played FreeLancer.

I can wait a loooong time.... meanwhile playing AC... racing... hopefully the FPS in a few months. Squadron 42 (Chapter 1) should debut 1st half 2016.

Unlike many Backers, I have an A.S. in Computer Science and about to FINALLY get my B.S. in Computer Networking... I understand the scope of what CIG is trying to do. An EPIC revolution in gaming. I have no illusions that it will happen soon... I'm 'roughly' guessing 2017 for a retail release but it wouldnt shock me or disappoint me if it took longer. Again... I understand what they are trying to accomplish. A lot of Backers who are whining dont have the intellect to absorb it.

I hope he takes as long as he needs to make it a great game. I really don't care if it doesn't come out for years.

I wonder if this will be the long awaited killer app for windows phone & surface?

Looks like so far every person with a degree in computer programming/software understands what is being done and needs to be done to get it right (chiming in with my B.S. in Computer Science and 15 years of computer/data center design/operations).

I always thought his timeline was a little ambitious. I see Squadron 42 slipping a little in time as there will be some FPS content in the single player (I highly suspect investigation mission or 3 to non-communicative output/station/ship and/or repelling boarding action on similar said objects), all of which is based on the same underlying mechanics of the FPS module (minus networking, but networking is only just one part of the mechanics, it is the whole modified API, object/model information, model skeletons/animations, etc., all of which are being created in/for the FPS module).

Oh yeah? I work in content creation (film/tv) so I understand the workflows he is up against as well ;)

Oh and your answer was 2 more years. ok seems reasonable.

It's great that you have infinite time and patience for this game to come to market but you're looking at it from a certain perspective. Let me try and give you a different one because there is more than one.

Unlike many backers I'm a business owner. My customers expect and demand that the product I produce be ready on time when I tell them it will be. If it's not I lose out on sales. If my product is not ready on time too many times in a row my customers will lose faith that I can provide them the product they want in the time frame I promised them. If that happens to many times I go out of business.

My business is no different than Chris'. If he disappoints to many times he will eventually go out of business and we all will be stuck with an unplayable game.

Technically he has delivered a game. :hmm: Someone would take him to court but I think he has fulfilled his obligations already.

I'm no lawyer, but isn't what he has released an alpha? He's admitting it isn't done...and if he releases it, they would sue for no support.
