Hey....what's everyone at AT using as far as input device for SC?

I'm using an Xbox 360 controller.

I saw a thread on the RSI forums where some guy data-mined the leaderboards and determined that about 60% of the players were using keyboard/mouse, 30% joystick/hotas and 10% gamepad.

With the overwhelming number of players using k/m, I figure I might as well join them (never been thrilled with the 360 controller).

But keyboard/mouse just doesn't feel natural to me. I'm really struggling. Some of this is due to re-learning everything I used to do on the 360 controller.

I guess what I'm saying is, I'm in the market for a joystick, but I'd like to know what other AT players are using and their experiences.

Thanks!

I use KB/M for SC, and the Xbox controller for Elite Dangerous.

Eventually it will be Oculus Rift and HOTAS for both.

I currently use kb/m since I don't own a joystick yet but I'm still in debate about picking one up.

I find it much easier to fine tune my aiming with the mouse than the times I have tried someone else's joystick. If it's possible I May try a setup where I maneuver my ship with the joystick but use my mouse to aim my reticle within my FOV

I've been using a HOMAS setup (Hands On Mouse And Stick) combined with Voice Attack and customize button layout for the mouse and stick (since I use the mouse to aim and fire, I remapped triggers on the stick to do other functions, like cycle targets).

In that setup, how do you control throttle? Buttons on the stick?

Currently using a T.16000M joystick although I have tried the HOTAS Warthog too I am finding the small ships easier to fly with the stick over the HOTAS. When they flesh out the systems interaction I will probably move over fully to the Warthog though. The Warthog is going going to be my sole Tali control system (with voice too).

LOL....I've just spent the past 30 minutes researching sticks. There are several very helpful reviews on Youtube, including some specific to SC.

Anyway, after my research, I'm leaning towards getting......the T16000m.

I like the fact it's left or right handed....I think I'm going to use the mouse with my right hand and stick with the left.....but until I try it out, I'm unsure.

I'm a casual gamer, so spending anything more (like the full Warthog system) is going to be overkill for me.

The T16000M also has very good sensors - a friend recently bought one for the competitive robotics team he coaches.

I'm really confused about this game, granted I have done somewhat limited research. It sounds like something I could really really get into, especially since I have been playing Elite: Dangerous. It just seems too far out for me to pay much attention to it at the moment.... patience is not one of my virtues.

That's definitely a fair perspective, and it is a good ways out. The AC module is still quite a bit of fun, but limited.

The stick I have has a throttle axis on it which I can control with my pinky finger if I shift my hand position on the stick lower (which can be done because I don't need to use the trigger buttons to fire weapons).

Well lucky for us the solution is simple. We play a good space game that is Elite Dangerous while waiting for the other good space game that is Star Citizen. :)

Are there any wireless joysticks?

There are plenty. But the real question you should be asking is "are there any wireless joysticks that are good for playing star citizen". My personal answer to that is no, especially once you factor in FPS combat. I personally CAN'T STAND FPS controls using a joystick or gamepad. I must have a mouse and keyboard for that kind of thing. Which is part of the reason why I am using the mouse as part of my current controls, as at least I will be able to snap aim, and get under cover if I need to jump out of the pilot seat to defend against a boarding party with using the mouse, and just need to switch to using the keyboard for movement.

So what do y'all think about the REC program upcoming in AC 1.1?

I poked around the RSI forums and it seems the community is somewhat divided on the issue (a bit surprising to me....but I'm starting to realize that as the community grows, so does the percentage of complainers within the community).

I like the idea. I like the rental period (one week's time) and the renewal discount concept.

But I'm not sure the concept will work that well. It won't take long for everyone to figure out what the best ships are (i.e. Super Hornets) and best guns and shields and scanners and etc.

Those are what everyone is going to save up to rent. So eventually AC will be filled with the same ships outfitted the same way. No diversity.

I mean, who's going to pay to rent a slow ass Aurora?

Regarding REC:

I don't mind the "rental" aspect much at all.

But you can only earn "REC" in match play?

I do mind that as a 99% PVE player I'll either be left out completely or end up cannon fodder for the hotshots.

Here is an odd fact: I played "Pirates of the Burning Sea" POTBS from Beta in 2007 until some time after it went F2P, maybe 2012. That is a rather vicious PvP game with a PvE component thrown in just to have a population I suppose.

I largely enjoyed it, but I am no good at even the slow paced PvP that game offers. I'll just be slaughtered trying to earn "REC" in Arena Commander.

There are also some fairness issues with regard to equipment, both real computer and virtual ship equipment, so I'm completely against restricting it to PvP players only.

Don't solo PvE types test the game too?

I have similar thoughts too as I'm an SP guy and really have little experience in MP. I think RSI is attempting to "force" us into the MP world as the PU will be largely MP...although supposedly there is a slider bar that you can set to limit interaction with real players.

I'm hoping RSI installs some type of match-making system in AC that will make it a bit more even. I have to imagine the "hot shot" pilots get pretty bored with picking off horrible pilots like me in my Aurora who offer very little challenge.

But if it takes me longer to grind REC while being cannon fodder....so be it. Maybe it'll force me to become a better pilot. If not, I grind away.....or I wait for the PU and economy to go live.

RE: REC.

Applies only to Arena Commander and gives an option to try different ships outside of your pledge / eventual UEC PU purchases. I don't see a downside, especially as a F7-C != game over. Also allows the dev team to test a broader range of weapons which will lead to better balancing.

I only play online with friends against the AI at this point. Maybe later on I'll try some public matches. I don't mind that REC is only awarded for group multi-player matches but I can see why some players would. At this point I'd rather have some of my larger ships in the hangar than some double-fake credits to spend on things I don't have.

My god....explain this to me. What does this mean!?

Is this like PtW mining ship that will get you unlimited credits or w/e?

:O

I need to look at getting this game....I sense a lighter wallet in my future.
