Update with Fallen Kell's uber list and carried forward. Fallen Kell, if you want to chime in on anything I put a question mark next to (mostly what specific variant) I'll make sure it's updated.

Edit: Dayum, this fleet shot is getting huge. I'll wait through the weekend for a last call then go to it.

cryengine ftw.

While CryEngine deserves a nod for giving SC its start, with how much its being modified (by some of the very engineers who created it), the original branch of CryEngine can't really take much credit.

I hear on the grapevine that behind closed doors at CIG their engine is referred to as StarEngine. If it proves to be very solid and adaptable, I can see them licensing it.

One thing I noticed about the default mapping is very poor strafing setup. IMO, strafing is best done with analog controls, so I would replace the left-stick "Free-Look" mapping with vertical / lateral strafe, and then forward / backward strafe to the analog triggers. You don't need throttle - - it's exactly the same as forward strafe.

This game gives you a lot of freedom of movement with the flight model (which I think is awesome), but it's hard to take advantage of it with those movements tied to digital control.

Here's a little video I just shot just flying around Kareah in regular SCM mode. Doing little things like peeking the nose of the ship into the window @ 33 seconds and especially close orbiting the spinning Aurora @ 55 sec. would be extremely difficult without analog strafe control.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIlnpwdFbDA

Oh man your piloting skills are great. Got any combat videos to share?
I just spent the past hour with some smucks who went in full throttle every goddamn time and when I was manning the turrets it's impossible to get a lock. Then boom we were dead.....I'd love to fly with a pilot with little more polish.

Thanks. I don't have any combat videos (just started messing around with ShadowPlay), but I'll record something tonight. I can't get into any BR matches in 2.1, but I think it's because nobody is playing it. I'll take on some Vanduuls and see how that goes. ;)

I can't wait until they finally get the contacts / server setup going correctly. I'll always invite a fellow AT Baller onboard! Lately I've flown the Connie quite a bit. It's not easy when people decide to engage. I could certainly use a turret gunner. My main tactic is to get distance on them, decouple, spin around and get as much forward fire on them as possible before they close the gap. Those big nacelle guns do serious damage when you do get them on target! The bad thing is ESP is a little funky in decoupled and it's a bit twitchy trying to keep the PIP on them.

So I happen to be sitting on $300+ in Amazon credit...I was looking at the CH Fighterstick and CH Pro throttle, but then started thinking about it a bit. It seems a dual-stick setup is popular for SC, and if that's the case I don't imagine people are using a throttle as well. Would it be a reasonable course of action to start with a T16000M, then if I decide dual stick is the way to go, make that secondary and switch to a Fighterstick as primary?

I've read about the T16000M feeling cheap, and having grown up with an old-school CH Products flight stick, I really appreciate the built-like-a-tank feel of CH gear. However, with the T16000M being ambidextrous (and a hell of a lot cheaper), it may be worthwhile to start off with one.

Oh absolutely.

There's a lot of plugins and other software in play as well. I think their entire system for rendering planets is proprietary.

That said.. it's still CryEngine at the core; something I've been following for about 10 years now.

It's like a highly tuned and modified Ferrari. Eventually, it's not much of a Ferrari anymore, but you can still see it and think 'damn ferraris are nice!'.

Well, I'm a big dual-stick proponent. I have a T16000M on my left as the up/down, left/right strafe stick with roll on the twist, and a CH Fighterstick as the primary pitch / yaw stick.

I use CH Pro Pedals to control forward / reverse strafe, and no hand-throttle. If you're going dual-stick, your hands are going to be occupied. ;) If you do end up with a hand throttle though, the CH is the one.

The Fighterstick has a distinct "bump" going across both axis (axii?), but as an old-school CH user you probably know about it.

I would like to try something like a T16000m or a Warthog as a primary just to see if that bump is messing me up any. The thing that sucks about the T16000 is the severe lack of buttons. As far as it feeling cheap, yeah, it kind of does. More importantly though, it's really comfortable and great for guys like me with smaller hands. I wouldn't worry about the cheap feel or the ugliness - - it's effective.

The cool thing about it though is you can get a super-accurate dual-stick setup for $80. That's a lot less than even a single Fighterstick. I may pick another one up just to see how it compares against the CH, but I would have to get creative with the control mapping due to the sparse button layout.

I'll echo the T16000M comments. I haven't used it in SC yet, but in flight sims it has held up really well, it's accurate, and feels smooth. It's just that it's made of plastic and has a plastic feel to it. But it doesn't feel flimsy.

And Stringjam - Star Trek TNG being the best Sci Fi? Please. Battlestar Galactica. :)

I can bounce between my xbox controller and kvm fairly seemlessly.

Is there a <$50 flight stick I could buy two (left/right) of to use for my ship without needing anything else? I can do almost everything with my xbox controller. But I'm not sure if I could easily do the same between two sticks.

T16000M. Not even a contest.

And get rudder pedals. ;)

And believe me, you can do WAY more with two sticks than you can with that controller. :)

I have my eye on this..waiting for the price to drop (Camelcamelcamel says it's often ~$100.

Recommendations on rudders?

if i really do get into this, come christmas I could buy much better hardware. I want to make sure I'll use it first. plus i have another system I could potentially run the game on, so maybe when i do upgrade controller hardware, the gf could use the stuff i buy now.

The CH Products Pro pedals seem popular and reliable - their Control Manager software is supposed to be incredible, but I believe all devices in use have to be from CH (which may be restrictive).

I have the CH Pros. Great pedals and are plug and play. I haven't tried their config software due to no need.

Depends on what you want to invest in pedals. Probably the two best pedals out there are the MFG Crosswind or the Slaw (either Device BF 109 or Device F16). But be prepared to spend $400-600 depending on options (and conversion rate since they are all custom foreign made).

For those of you with dual sticks, how do you have stuff bound? I am considering going dual T16000M but I'm not sure about the keybind setup or stuff like throttle control.

I have the CH ProPedals and they're solid. I only use the toe-brakes though. I used to use the slide-axis for lateral strafe when I had a hand throttle. The only thing I didn't like about the slide axis was the detents towards the end of travel.

Yeah, the software is really good and easy to use....way better than the Thrustmaster software I got for the T16000.

I don't really take advantage of it for anything advanced - I just use it to calibrate my Flightstick and pedals.

I calibrate the pedals so that they hit 100% a little bit before being fully depressed. That way I don't have to press the toe brake into the floor to make sure I'm at full speed.

As far as important controls:

Primary Stick:
Y Axis: Pitch
X Axis: Yaw
Trigger: Boost
Trigger (double tap): Afterburner
Side button: lock / fire missiles

Strafe Stick:
Y Axis: vertical strafe
X Axis: lateral strafe
Twist: roll
Trigger: fire (I find that firing the weapons on my off-hand stick is more accurate for me)
Hat: free-look
Middle button: decoupled
Left button: cycles friendlies
Right button: cycles enemies

Pedals:
Right toe: forward strafe
Left toe: reverse strafe

That's kind of it in a nutshell for the important stuff. I'll try to find some diagrams to do a visual instead of just writing it out.

Other stuff on the primary stick hats:

Hat: SCM / PCM / SuperCruise

Hat: GSafe / COMSTAB / LAM

Hat: Cycle Countermeasures

Hat: Look Behind / Enter QD

Pinky trigger: QD Menu

Top button: Launch Countermeasures

There's more but I'll get to work on the diagrams.

I think it's an exciting time for CryEngine fans, because CIG hired some of the Crytek engineers and they're doing things with the engine that they never imagined.

For one, they've converted it back to 64-bit map precision. They're also re-coding the way the engine handles object updates to make it way more optimized for multi-player environments.

The SC branch of CryEngine is going to be amazing!

I think it's only fitting that the engine that really put PC fidelity at the top of the heap is going to once again show it's stuff with the release of the next great PC exclusive.

No doubt! Congrats on finding one! Too bad you couldn't have flown it in 1.2 or earlier...it was way more quick and could strafe / orbit like mad. It still can though, just a little bit more restrained. ;)

I still think it's one of the best looking ships CIG ever designed (and one of the earliest). It's great to take it into combat...just don't get shot. Oh...and load it up with some Tarantulas. ;)

how do you get an M50?

I'm seriously thinking about spending a little bit more and upgrading my ship.
