oh pleazzz

logging in America is a pretty stable business of cutting and replanting. they're probably more trees now than there were at the turn of the century.

Just how freakin' stupid do the tree huggers think we are? We grow as many trees as we use. Trees ARE a renewable resourse.

What next? Protest corn farmers because they cut down the corn plants?

Idiots.

BS. Trees are crop just like corn and wheat. Do you protest when they harvest those?

Old growth trees are never cut for paper. It's a waste, old growth trees are best for furniture and such.

I'm with pyonir.. last I heard, Staples doesn't do their own logging and paper production. If this group *really* wanted to do something about discouraging 0% or almost 0% post-consumer content products, go to the people who actually make the paper. Right now, they're just targeting some group with a recognizable name. Who's actually heard of more than half the names on this list of paper product producers?

Protesting against logging is one thing, griping about reforestation is another, then there's misdirected angst.

My only regret is that I don't work at a Staples. This situation would prove great fun for me I think.

Actually there are more trees today than there were when the Pilgrims landed. There just aren't as many old growth forest. Loggers generally replant ten trees for every tree they cut, IIRC.

Oh, and if you want an example of environmental idiocy, get this. A few years ago in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, there was a spring storm. The wind gusts were up to 150 MPH in the mountains, and tens of thousands of trees in the Routt National Forest were blown down. Now, the smart thing to do would be to go in there and harvest the toppled trees, right? Well, thanks to protests by environmental clubs such as the Sierra Club, it never happened. And now, there is a massive epidemic of bark beetles, which have been feeding on the dead wood for the last couple of years, and are now moving to the healthier trees in the national forest.

WTF?! These people need more things to do. Maybe we should feed them to the bark beetles. That way, the beetles will choke to death and we'll be better off.

<< Myth: ?To sell 100 percent (post-consumer recycled paper) ? would be just impossible.? Staples Executive.

Fact:
Staples is the largest and fastest growing office supply store in the world, and a corporation worth $11-billion. Over 20 companies produce 100% recycled or tree-free paper. Hundreds of companies, non-profit organizations and individual consumers currently use 100 percent recycled paper and tree-free paper from vendors like www.recycledofficeproducts.com, http://www.gregbarberco.com, www.livingtreepaper.com and www.newleafpaper.com.Staples is also a sponsor of America Recycles Day, but they are unwilling to close the loop and sell products made primarily from recycled fiber.
>>

Myth: We could easily double our prices to cover the difference in cost of buying paper that is mostly post-consumer recycled paper and still stay in business.

Fact: Ummm...no we can't

"They can't see the forest for the trees" seems an appropriate moniker for the people that made that web site.

You know, recycled paper is great, but the shi*t doesn't work in copiers or printers at all.
