I think this is very pertinent to Hot Deals, so mods should leave it up for a while. Anyway, I tried to PM Crucial.com to Staples and the CSR told me that they got a memo from corporate HQ's yesterday saying that they are not allowed to price-match Crucial.com anymore because they memory is allegedly refurbished (BS!) and the part numbers don't match up. The CSR I talked to tried to do it for me, but the computer system did not allow her. After she talked to her supervisor, she told me about this new change. Well, one less item to PM at Staples :(

**************UPDATE******************
BTW, I called again, and again, and again and finally found CSR that helped me to PM! I was pretty confident that she would do it when she said that she did the same pricematch last night! So, I got $22 back (she did not charge me for shipping, but could not make her go through webpromo link, so don't try that ;)), and because I was under $100, I had to throw in $7 more, so I bought two 5-packs of Memorex 80min CD-R's that I paid about $11 for. So my total was $95 (original price I paid) - $22 = $73 and I got ten extra CD-R's. Not bad. I only used $25 off coupon as I used up all $30 off :) BTW, I was smart enough to get her name AND extension, so call Brigette at x5123. She is my new favorite CSR, needless to say :) I hope she won't kill me for this, so please be the nicest people in the whole world, thanks :)

I ordered a 256 from them on Sat. PM'd to crucial.com.

Crucial was listing $103 on line but the Staples CSR didn't believe me and would only knock the price to $108. (CSR was O.K. w/ free shipping but disagreed on the price.)

Crucial now shows $88.39 so I called Staples today to revisit the PM and they checked and checked and finally came back and said "uhh... We can't PM mfgs. but we'll let your existing PM stand"

They noted it in my "permanent record" :disgust: and now every time I call they immediately tell me they can't PM a mfg.

I also got nailed on those 30GB Maxtors. I've been ordering them for weeks at $89/ea. (BB PM @ $109 - $30 coupon) but when I ordered one yesterday they told me BB raised the price. Only thing I could do was PM to CC for $139 instead.

B.T.W. Staples will re-do the PM on request for up to two weeks after the order was placed and refund your CC for the difference.

worms,

Even if Staples had PM'ed the $88.39 you wouldn't have been able to apply the $30 off $100 coupon so I don't think you lost out.

If true, it doesn't matter that Staples isn't going to pricematch Crucial anymore cuz $90 for CAS 2 from Crucial is a better deal than the CAS 3 Pricematch with Staples deal from before...that is unless someone knows of a $25 off $75 coupon that still works...

I could have had the memory and a couple nice reams of laser paper for $100 even - $8 less than I'm now paying for just the memory.

I am fairly new to this pricematch thing but my first impression is that the Staples CSRs take a lot of liberties when stating policy.

Example: I called to have them PM Buy.com on an Iomega CD-RW.

- The first guy said they had to charge me 2nd day shipping. That's weird because Buy.com was not charging shipping. I figured he was wrong, so I hung up and called back.

- The second lady said they didn't even have the item in stock?!? (They did 2 minutes before... Hmmmm)So I hung up and called back.

- The third time I called, (less than a minute later) they had the drive back in stock again! *WOW* - fast restockers! =] Anyway the guy was totally cool and did the PM AND sent it without shipping charges. They make you work for those PMs sometimes, but I'm a happy camper.

Yea do they do have some elementary kind of system where they keep track of you. During the whole Elsa Gladiac GTS 2 fiasco, I tried PM and I called a bunch of times to try to get that extra TV and I got into a big old argument with one of the supervisors and I almost got flagged as trying to defraud them, anyway they do keep notes on your record for calls made cuz she read off all the times I called. freaking bastards I tell you.

I am middle of writting letter to attorney general of MA and you should do same for his office to make full investigation on staples policies and how they decline legitimate pricematches and how they restrict accounts of people who do not want pay retail prices that use pricematches and coupons

If you get a good pricematch you are lucky---

Report Staples and eventually someone will get pissed off and change the policy so you can't use coupons; etc....

Reminds me of the once great Office Depot 155% deal that no longer exists.

Have no fear people Staples internet price match policy is about to end anyways.
And they will be putting in place a new 16digit coupon code system unique to each user.

Stay Tuned

Well, after about an hour on the phone, the Staples CSR agreed to adjust my Crucial.com PM to the $93 price (order was originally placed Sat PM'd to $108). Couldn't get her to do the $88 /webpromo price even though I talked her through viewing the $88 price on her computer. But $93 and no hassle about the $30/100 coupon eligibility, it was finally 'good enough'.

I'd feel better if I had an actual invoice (and RAM) in hand right now but at least I have two birds in the bush and the CSR's ID#.

PMs are a great way to save a lot of money, but at some point they aren't worth the frustration (for me at least). It is always a fine line.

I dunno... I'd rather buy my stuff from Crucial.
If they're the ones making my neato cheapo RAM,
I figure I'd at least give them MY BUSINESS.

Remember, Staples maybe jacking you, but you're
jacking Crucial. =(

<< PMs are a great way to save a lot of money, but at some point they aren't worth the frustration >>

Yeah, I agree. I didn't sign up for this much frustration. The original deal of $108-$30 was the best in town, easy enough to do, and went relatively smoothly. Then Crucial dropped the price so much that I could get a CAS2 chip instead and have it delivered much sooner, all for $90, I just had to revisit the pending $80 Staples deal. That was when they gave me the "can't PM mfgs" run around and I told them to simply cancel the order but they were unable to reliably cancel it - leaving me with the potential hassle of dealing with delivery refusals and return credits.

<< Remember, Staples maybe jacking you, but you're jacking Crucial >>

No, I'm helping Crucial. Crucial sells the ram to Staples for much more than $90 and doesn't have to deal with individual orders, packing, or CC surcharges. I am jacking Staples however, but they set their policies knowing well that a percentage of customers will take extreme advantage.

eventhough I agree with most of your comments regarding the Staples PM policy.....with all the bitching, moaning, are we killing the goose that lays the golden egg? Think of all the dealz we've gotten from them. Give them a break.

This weekend I was at staples,Office Max & OD , they ALL refused to PM with any web site ( I was trying to get the Linksys DSL router), they all said will only PM with a "Store" , this is in california.
Go figure.
