I have two of these and paid twice that much for both. they seem to be very good, easy to install and no troubles what so ever in past year.

for 19.97, why not? my 40x memorex troubles me at times with burned material, so i'll try the 48, maybe mines just getting old.

I have the CD-482E, and it does not read all disk. The Hi-Val cdr for instance. I am currently looking for a cdrom that will read a better variety of disk.

If this is the same model...... I would say pass. Only because... for the newer faster cdrom's this is just unacceptable to me. They should be very capable of reading everything you throw at them.

i have one of these at home and it does a good job. it only digitally audio extracts at 6x, so it can't keep up with the 8x burner :) btw, cdroms read dics, not disks. disk is short for diskette, which are floppies. discs refer specifically to the shape of the media, as in discus.

i just picked up 2 of these today and used the $25 off purchase of $100 coupon (and had to buy a pack of gum there to bring the total to $100 for the coupon). With coupon and rebates i will end up just paying $10 for each! you can also just buy one and use the $10 off $40 purchase and the final cost comes to about $10 for the unit too. Sounds like a good deal to me even tho i don't know anything about this unit! vroom

They have both analog & digital audio outputs as well.

BUT ... the rebate is only good for $20, it's a typo (check the rebate link on their web site). At least that's the story I got on the phone from Staples ...

I bought one a while back and in some weird coincidence, my brother in New York also bought it. It's loud as h@#l when spinning at full-speed. The DAE rate for mine is 8x. It was grabbing at 2x or 3x, until I enabled DMA. Anyways, for a cheapo solution, it's fine. Hasn't had any problems reading Audio CD's, CD's or CD-Rs. But, be prepared to have your computer sound like an airplane when it's spinning. :)

NOTE: Staples refused to honor my $ 20 MIR (on a 40X) because I used a $20 off $50 in my purchase about 2 months ago. Don't plan on getting the rebate if you use a coupon. I argued with 3 CSRs and kept getting it was a violation of they're rebate policy.

Hmmm maybe the Hi-Val disk that I am having problems with were not
"finalized"?? Anyone shed some light on whether or not "finalizing" a disk would make it hard to read? I don't have a burner (yet), but do have some CDR's that won't work on my Memorex. Anyone have any idea what would make them unreadable? I have read that some CDR's are more "transparent", and are harder to read. Also that if a disk is not "finalized" it also can create problems. If it is due to a disk not being finalized... how can that be fixed?

funny that this post pops up today, because i just got my $20 rebate today!

a few months ago, i bought it at $50 - $20off50 = $30 shipped, then with the $20 rebate it came out to $10 shipped! not bad...

it IS significantly louder on spin-up than other CD-roms i've had, but it has not had any problems with reading any discs that other cd-roms could read. for this price, i'd be ok with it.

Got it for $10 a couple months ago, same as clutz123. Haven't used it yet, but got the rebate a couple days ago. I've gotten every rebate I've ever sent to staples (4 or so) and all except one I used with a coupon. One thing about this drive, if you have a messed up case (like some Microns) that use the flip down face/cover/cdrom-only 5.25" bay, this drive would be an easy replacement. It has a flip down face/cover - tray comes out of the hole as it pushes the cover over. Kind of lame, but for $10...

Yeah I just got my staples rebate for $20 about two weeks ago from staples from this cd-rom
I did buy the cd-rom about two months ago same with your deal clutz123 ($50-20 of 50 - 20 MIR) I got it around $13 because of tax.
Mine can read any cd-r and never got any problems with it. For cheap CD-rom memorex is OK.

hmm... i dunno if this is the same cd-rom... but a while back i bought a memorex 48x cd-rom from the staples website for $10 after coupon and mail-in-rebate.. (it was about $50.. i applied the $20 off of $50 and there was an additional $20 MIR.. which i promptly received).. the cd-rom works juss fine.. no probs (can't say too soon though!)... so i guess for this price, it's alright but not a RED HOT DEAL or anything...
