Don't know if it's just in my store or nationwide, but i grabbed a new in box Yamaha 20x10x40 burner at the local Staples B&M for $59.50 clean (No coupons, mail-in-rebates or pricematching required, and thankfully no sales tax here in DE). Not the deal of a lifetime, but something nice and useful to look for in case you have a Staples store credit you need to use and see it in your store.

sure, the SKU showing on my receipt is 027108102320. And actually, the price was 59.50, not 59.95... small difference i know, but every bit helps :)

Anyone know what the real (not rated) DAE performance of this
writer is? And since someone will eventually ask this
anyway, I'll include the question here: Can it read/write copy
protected discs.

This thing is really "Lightspeed"!

It makes coasters faster than ANY burner I've EVER SEEN!

I called Staples and got a really helpful person, Brenda. The SKU is 461489 and the price is $59. Only one left in my area. :( There are no rebates available. But for $59 this is a steal. Remember the 16x Yamaha closeout last summer. That was sweet! And all 5 of my rebates came!

<<Yamaha calls this technique "SafeBurn" and actually it's not one technology but a combination of several techniques.

? Buffer Under-run protection (Just-link by Oak Technology)

? 8Mb Buffer (Compared to most other drives which most often have about 2-4Mb buffer)>>

IMHO Yamaha doesn't make crap! First class all the way.

Looks like it may be Mac compatible, too: Apple iTunes compatibility

How does this compare to 32x12x40 CenDyne (rebadged Lite-on) that's selling for $54.99 AR & coupon, besides the fact that the 32x Lite-on can copy Safe-Disc2 and the Yamaha 20x cannot.

Just out of curiousity...is this the model of Yamaha CDRW that can be used on both SCSI and IDE? I heard about a Yamaha one that can do both SCSI and IDE with a jumper change or something.... Any idea?

<< man...

seems like a good deal... should i get one?

or just stay with my 12x

hmmm

Well, that depends. Do you burn a lot of CD's? If yes, maybe you should go for it. Is your CD burner reliable and rarely make coasters? If yes, I'd keep what you have. I have a 12X Sony that does a great job. I have no plans to replace it until they have a drive that burns CD's and DVD's (that costs less than my truck payment!).

glenn1: Can you tell us if the CD-RW is Model CRW3200EZ, or something else? Does it say LightSpeed 3 on the box?

Thanks!

vsfoxe, the 20x is 2200EZ.

I have this drive and it burns a full 80min CD-R in 5 minutes or so.
I never use though for reading cdroms. It is so slow in recognizing different media. Put a cdrom in, and it takes 20seconds or so for it to recognize it. I hear it spin up, then down, then up again. I suppose it is checking the disc to see if it is either CDRW, CD-R, or just a readable CDROM. Anyway, I hate the wait, so I use my slot-load Pioneer 106s, for everything else besides burning. It recognizes and has the disc ready almost instantly.

Besides the above complaint, I've so far burned about 50discs with no coasters.
And I'm still waiting on my $50 rebate from Best Buy/Yamaha. :(

I have this. Has not made a coaster in the 4 months I've had it...and I burn almost on a daily basis.

As for the "safeburn", I've played CS while burning a VCD successfully. So take that for what you will. 5 minutes for an 80 minute VCD just about.
