Standby or hibernate?

Can you guys tell me if there is any difference between these modes in terms of saving saving money on my electric bill? What about leaving the computer on? Does leaving it on (doing nothing) use the same amount of electricity compared to working on it (games, programming, etc.)?

Thanks.

I believe hibernate turns the computer completly off while storing what was on the memory to the hard drive. Standby gives the memory power but turns everything else off keeping what is stored on the memory on the memory. So hibernating will save you a little bit of electricity. I think running a computer idle uses the same amount of power as gaming on it maybe gaming uses a little more.

So how much power does a computer use when its on? is it equivalent to a light bulb? if not, what is it equivalent to? the reason why i'm asking is because my electric bill is unusually high these past few months and i want to know if its because i've been leavin g the computer on during the night for downloading or because i'm simply leaving the lights/appliances on too often.

yep ... he's right ...
hibernate turns the computer off and stores the stuff on your hdd to boot up the same why you left it...sometimes it messes up and you have to just restart it as normal. takes a gig of hdd space too, i think.

Now i'm not too sure about the energy used ... but i don't think your 300 watt psu is always using up 300watt ... cuz you can add more devices and fans and it will still run them... so you are probably using less than 300watt in this case ... i remember calculating a 3 years ago (don't know what the cost of energy is nowadays) leaving a computer on 12 hours a day for 30 days was about $10-15 (in socal)

have you been using more hot water with an electric hot water heater? this was one of our problems and we switched to gas decades ago ...

make sure you have your monitor off as well ...
maybe there was an increase in your electric bill?
