Standby mode slows CPU?

Hey all.

Wierd problem. Whenever my PC goes into standby mode, it cuts the multiplier from 10x to 4x, which takes my CPU speed down from 2400mhz to 960mhz (reported in Sandra and CPU-z). Why does this happen? Cool N Quiet is disabled in BIOS and my power scheme is not on minimal. When I reboot, everything goes back to normal. CPU temps are ok (usually 40-50C depending on load). 3dmark and other benchmarks show the decreased performance, although it feels the same in Windows and playing Far Cry (although that's probably video card limited I guess).

AMD64 3000
Running at 2400mHz (FSB 240*10)
Asus K8N-E Deluxe
1GB Kingston value RAM
GF-4200
WinXP SP2

Appreciate any advice or insight. Thanks

eh, how bout not using standby?

you can use your power options to set the pc to power off the monitor after set amount of time, that will save the majority of the electricity (assuming that's why you use standby on a desktop), and you don't have to worry about any power saving "features" bugs.

Thing is though, it is a problem that does seem to exist in this instance. Microsoft had similar thoughts with Outlook - they found that Outlook was being used to send viruses. So, rather than come up with a good solution, they simply thought, "Ok, no more dangerous file attachments." And so, you can't send EXE files through Outlook, which sucks if you want to send a self-extracting compressed file to someone who doesn't have WinRAR or WinZIP. But then Outlook says "No way" and won't let the file through.

Check Asus' website; maybe there's a BIOS update for this?

Well, I won't use standby from here on out....I just wanted to make sure this was some sort of bug and not a hardware issue. Was hoping its been seen before. I have perused all threads on my Asus motherboard and I have not heard of any reports of this.

Having some users change an extension can be a horrible challenge, especially when you need to tell them how to configure Explorer to show extensions, which it no longer does by default in WinXP. Just giving instructions on how to run a self-extracting program can be arduous for some people.:)
