Standby locks up laptop

Hi,
I have an HP pavilion n5125 orininally celeron 500 that I upgraded to a pIII650 cpu, and whenever I put it/it goes into standby, it simply dies and won't wake up or turn on no matter what I do, but if I take out the battery and unplug it for about 48 hours, I can then turn it on and it works fine again. The only other mod I made was putting in a 20 gb hard drive, IBM, which of course died on my and I got a refurb back from RMA that seems to work fine. the drive has worked fine, the problem seemed to arrise with the new cpu but I haven't tried swapping back to the old one (it's a real pain to deal with those tiny screws with mitts like mine🙂)

any ideas/suggestions as to what's going on here?
