Standby isn't working

For the past few months, standby/sleep hasn't worked properly on my desktop (Vista business, 64 bit). When I hit sleep, it now turns the monitor off without turning off my fans (is it in s1/s2 or something?)
I didn't really care until now because I had gotten into a habit of leaving my machine on 24/7, but I figure I might as well save some electricity.

It used to work perfectly, and went into S3 with all the fans shutting off. The only thing I can think of is that this might be related to my video card change - I went from an X1900XT to a 4850, and I think that was when I started having this issue with sleep functionality.

Will it hibernate? This would be my personal preference as it turns off quickly and boots in about a third of the time. Sleep uses more power and is much more susceptible to malfuctions (not the least of which is not going into the correct sleep mode).

Vista has had a tendency to go to sleep properly for me, then wake up again spontaneously after about 30 seconds to 30 minutes. Usually more towards 30 seconds than 30 mins tho...

Seems to be the usual windows rot at work, it starts doing this maybe 6-10 months down the road. Once it starts happening, absolutely nothing I do can fix it, short of a complete OS reinstall. It amazes me that power saving modes still are so utterly unreliable, 10+ years after the feature was introduced.

Just reinstall the OS, probably for the best. You've probably got lots of junk in the registry and old DLLs cluttering up your drives anyway. :)

My latest build had the wake in 30 minutes problem. I disabled wake on lan and it corrected that. I have that and another Vista 64 Ultimate machine side by side and they sleep flawlessly.
