Can anybody offer any suggestions on getting this thing more quiet in standby mode? All fans continue to run - no change in noise level.

I does stop the HD from what I can tell.

I did try another bios from the vendor a while back and I had to reinstall bc it hosed up the format on the HD.

Please dont suggest bios update.

The easiest solution is a fan-controller. Or you might want to go into HIBERNATE mode instead of STANDBY.

Also, Antec's Tri-Cool fans can be manually switched to HI-MED-LOW.

Turn-off the PC. Saves $. Reboot should only take about 30 seconds.

Another option is to use a better CPU cooler like Big Typhoon and a better case (Antec Solo).

I find myself actually agreeing with SerpentRoyal again.

My gosh, are people this impatient? Heck, if my HTPC was on all the time (even in standby) I would end up having to wait for my LCD or receiver to finish powering up because those take a few seconds. Basically I just hit the power button for the HTPC first, immediately followed by the receiver and LCD. By the time I can see a picture on the LCD, Windows is literally around 10 seconds away from the desktop.

Alternately like both SerpentRoyal and teclis1023 were trying to say, make the darn system quieter.

Well, its debatable what it saves. Since most systems can pull very minimal current in standby or certainly in hibernate, the cost could be the frequent power up and down in terms of hardware durability. I also prefer to resume the apps/files that I had previously opened and started work in.

Powersupply IS an antec. Fans are not running on the PS normally.

Cooler is Arctic cooler freezer 7

But the case fans seem to be the ones making the most noticable noise.

It actually is one of the more quiet systems I have seen. But still more noise than most in the family are familar with bc they are generally used to having older gen hardware and the systems they use are not in bedrooms.

So, I guess I will try hibernate.

edit
There are exceptions, but generally, most in the business agree, that systems last longer (especially as they begin to consume MORE power), if they are not constantly powered up and down. Thermal transitions is the most significant factor.

And its not an el-cheapo case

Still have my 600MHz PIII PC. At least 3 start/stop cycles per day for about 6 years. Still running strong.

Look in the power management section of the BIOS. You should see some option for sleep mode or similar, it will probably say S1. Change that to S3. Everything should turn off now.

Yep, that certainly made an improvement. Now I just need to get it set to work only on command. thanks

It's probably a rogue usb device. Try the process of elimination and unplug your usb devices.
