Standardizing audio volumes

As we know, cd's of old used a lower volume level when they were produced. I was wondering if there is an application to increase the volume level of tracks for some of the files that I own. The formats are both mp3's and ogg's.

In the past I would burn them with nero then rip the back, but that seems like a long way around a problem. Any suggestions?

<s>Replaygain appears to be built in to players, which is fine for playback , but I was looking at modifying the files themselves. Of course I might be incorrect in this.</s>

I was incorrect. I will try out mp3gain. Arbitrary source, but thanks for the info.

Actually, CDs did not use lower volume before. They just didn't have to suffer getting the hell compressed out of them.

For this reason, I suggest you use MP3Gain to lower the volume of your newer tracks, instead of raising the volume of your old tracks. This way, you will keep the dynamics of the music as the artist intended them.
