You have to change your power management to ACPI in the BIOS and re-install windows whatever. (95 doesn't use it) ACPI is only detected during setup I think.

Check MS Knowledge Base. It says the only way to get ACPI back is to reinstall. Once again, unless someone found a way, this is the only way...I think :)

Is there anything bad about running in standard pc besides the fact you got to manually turn off ??

There was a procedure outlined on this forum a while back that, if I remember correctly, involved turning on ACPI in BIOS and then doing an upgrade install over top of the existing installation. The concensus was that there was about a 50-50 chance of success. I tried it myself on two different installations; one worked and one didn't.

Uniprocessor is only for dual CPU mainboards with a single CPU installed.

A re-setup does not necessarily mean a format and is not to be confused with an upgrade. It is simply running setup again and choosing the repair option.

I reckon if it is working now then donut mess with it. My info may be dated. I know 2000 does not default to Uniprocessor and there was a distinction betwixt Uni, Dual, and plain ACPI PC. Perhaps that changed with XP.

How many systems out there will default to Standard PC during the install? I installed XP on a Supermicro P6SBA BX mobo and it ended up as a Standard PC. I don't remember actually selecting this. I had turned on "Plug and Play aware OS" in the BIOS but I guess that didn't help. I have since found an "ACPI Control Register" in BIOS that was off. I've turned it on. If I reinstalled, would that do the trick.

My same generation Asus P2B BX mobo ended up as an ACPI PC.

Not a big deal for the Supermicro since I don't use it much, but I still hate having to manually shut it off. I was gonna reinstall anyway, since I'm gonna use a different XP licence.

By the way, where does one get the interrupt list in WinXP? I want to see if my bazillion peripherals are all on IRQ 9 or whatever on the ACPI-ified Asus, just for interest's sake.

start menu > Accessories > system tools > system information > hardware resources

I have ACPI disabled and running Standard PC. I had poor results with trying to run ACPI

Well, I think as you discovered any chipset where there is an option for ACPI determines whether 'twill be installed. Newer ones do not necessarily have the option so 2000/XP will likely install ACPI by default where it is known to be supported. I know my i440BX had the option while my i815EP does not.

So if you turned it on the BIOS now and ran a repair setup 'twould likely be installed.
