I got a TV for christmas and now I need some ways to use it
I want to get a VCR and a DVD player
I was wondering if picture quality really differs between VCRs, I want to spend around $60 dollars but I don't want a crappy picture.
I am also wondering the same thing about the DVD player, if I only spend $150 am I wasting my time, or are there good DVD players for that price?

unless you're watching your vhs's/dvd's on a high-quality tv it shouldn't matter. what kind of tv do you have and what inputs does it have?

27" JVC and I'd have VCR on composite and the DVD on component

I just got a 69.99$ dvd player at fry's, and i'm told they have similar prices at Circuit City and K-Mart. The Apex AD1500 is working great for me, nice quality nice features, everything a newbie dvd watcher needs

I got the Samsung DVD-v1000 DVD/VCR Combo and I highly recommend it. Its a good 4 head vcr plus the dvd player reads DVD/VCD/SVCD/CD/CDR/MP3 discs.

I'm a CostCo member and yesterday received some coupons from them in the mail. They're going to have a GoVideo combo DVD/VCR on sale soon ... unfortunately I forgot the price :(

When it comes to VCRs, you can find a decent one for around $69.99. JVC, Panasonic and Sony all make excellent VCRs. Personally I'm a Panasonic zealot.

There are several great entry level DVD Players which can be had for $150 or less. If you want something region hackable get an Apex. If you want something that plays almost every CD format get the Panasonic RV31K. One of the current best deals on DVD Players is the highly regarded Toshiba SD1700 for $99, sure it doesn't play all CD formats but it plays DVD's and CD's beautifully and has zoom. I've owned 2 Toshiba DVD Players and have nothing but great things to say about them.

If you can afford it, get the Panasonic. There might still be some $5 off $35 Amazon coupon codes floating around.
