Stand Alone CD-Recorders any good??

My dad listens to lots of CD's, but does not really care to learn/know how to use computers, so i am thinking i would buy him a stand alone CD-Recorder
Has anyone ever bought one of these?
do they work well?
recommendations?

Some people use them. I heard they are picky about the type of media they take. Someone told me they only take disks branded with "Audio" or "Music"...
