So here I sit in one of the many many library computer labs on campus.... my buddy is with me and we are both casually chatting on aim... He seems to have a problem with the fact that I am dicking around on ATOT... not that I have something better to do or what not... but that I am using up a computer...

I point out that probably more than half of the 50 or so people in the room are currently looking at the facebook... and he is now trying to argue that looking at the facebook is acceptable because everyone does it and maybe it has to do with school and a bunch of other bs...

I say they are just as welcome to stalk friends as I am to trolling and neffing... He is whining about message boards and forums and so on...

So... ATOT ... is Facebooking more acceptable in an over crowded computer lab?

facebooking wins because you're at school. that's where facebook started up, right? so facebook by default but if you are on neutral ground then it's different.

edit: oh yeah and you should know better than to ask a facebook vs. ATOT question here. a lot of these fuckers hate facebook even though they've never seen it.

I just believe I have my right to waste time just like everyone else... He thinks they should find a way to block forums and message boards...

Personally I might have to say that Facebook is more acceptable because those are your real life friends you are talking to and not you made up internet friends like on ATOT.

True. There are tons of informative, education boards that could be directly related to the project you are working on in the lab.

One of my classes last year was too big to have a discussion session like the professor wanted so he made a message board instead.

Do you use Facebook at a large school?

Right around admission time and move-in time, you get a huge number of invites from freshmen. They'll facebook any and everyone in existence.

So are they made up? Probably not. Are they friends? Doubtful.

Who says you have to accept? The best part of Facebook is that you control everything. No stranger can see more than a profile picture yet you can keep all of your friends who are spread around the world up to date with pics and news. I tried the myspace and friendster thing but those aren't as cleanly written nor well-presented as Facebook. There's no auto-loading of crap music when you first hit the page or green text on some fuzzy background the person thought was clever either. I was skeptical at first but find it a lot better than the others.

I think people need to try it before they dismiss it as just another fad site with no benefits except to "show off" themselves. Of course the other piece is that your friends have to do it too. It's nice for those of us who are out of college and don't keep up as often.

Ya, ATOT or general surfing is worse than facebook. I mean damn, if someone needs a computer for facebook, you give it to them cause they can't use their overpriced phone to call or *gasp* text them. Sounds like your friend is one of those people think who they are "cool" in school.

Yeah, I get alot of that and promptly reject them all. Its not like people are gonna think your cool for having 1000 Facebook friends or something, personally when I see people like that I consider them insecure and definitely NOT cool.

Why are you letting someone else decide what is an appropriate use of your computer time? Do whatever you feel like doing.

Why did this not end in "...so i punched him in the face, he fell out of his chair, which freed up another computer, which solved his problem with me."

Yeah wtf. Step 1 to being ATOT Advocate: Carry bricks in case you need to defend ATOT against idiot friends.

Facebook wins because whatever is popular at the moment always wins.

I joined it during first semester, at the urging of my roommate. It's gotten quite MySpacey lately, though I didn't do much of anything with it to begin with.

I got that, too - friend request things from people who I'd just seen in passing, whom I didn't even know how they learned my name. Then you see people who have hundreds or thousands of friends listed. Mhmm, right. They probably wouldn't even remember all those names.
I have pared down my friends list, removing those extraneous ones who just wanted to be on Facebook's unofficial "Most friends" list. One of them on my friends list, I happened to remove at an opportune time - she had 666 friends. :D My list is at another fine number - 13.
