So I just got Stalker from GoGamer and I was wondering what mods I should definitely grab to make my experience as good as possible?

AMK Mod, English version, it makes S.T.A.L.K.E.R. the way the developers originally planned to, and even more, even to make you wonder if the X-Ray Engine really is as old as it is supposed to (and yes it is, but the irony is that it does things that the most recent shooters haven't even touched yet, with the exception of the upcoming FarCry 2).

With that said, here's a link for more information: http://board.oblivion-lost.de/showthread.php?t=12558

And another one, at the official developers' forums under the modifications section: http://www.gsc-game.com/main.p...11445&sec_id=16#138333

A direct download link here: http://www.mediafire.com/?pwjocxs0gka

That link above is for the basic installation, those files are necessary, it's the full mod in other words.

Then, this link, another download: http://www.mediafire.com/?jlyhnu9ygmy

That's a patch that updates the English translations already done in the basic installation.

Voila, now enjoy the real S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and let me and others know what you think of it.

That sounds really cool! I'm gonna grab it tonight once I find a link to the 1.0004 patch.

Yeah AMK mod is amazing, it really is the Holy Grail- I am running Float32 with it no problems aswell (Float32 speeds up frame rates and improves visuals for modern cards).

The only one I've played is faiakes mod v2.4. I like it. Some people don't, as it is really just a very large compilation of mods. Some people only want a few crucial mods, keeping the base STALKER mostly there. And the number of mods in faiakes is kind of ridiculous but a lot of them I like. I went on a STALER mod hunt a few months ago. I haven't played any yet but here's what I downloaded:

Twilight K.E.T - looks great from what I've read in the readme. But note that it seems like faiakes in that it has a ton of modifications so it may not be for someone who wants to mostly preserve the original game.
Priboi Story - Another large modification but from what I've read and as the name implies, it's focus is a much different main story and not so much a large collection of small mods. Probably best for someone who has completed STALKER already.
OLmod by Bolm - without posting the change list, it does make quite a few changes, but comes in at like 1/5 the size of the above mods so I'm not sure what the deal is

There is also Oblivion Lost, ABC/ABC Inferno, AMK, SRP, and this one that combines like three large mods.

All in all it is kind of hard to figure out what is what and good. But reading these changelogs for the mods I listed, man makes me want to fire one of them up right now! So mainly I just wanted to post some names on some of the more popular large mods I found. I actually would like to see some comments from people who've played several mods to sort of rank them or give the gist of what they are/do.

Zenoth: What ever happened to that new ABC Inferno? I never played the old one as I was going to wait for the new big release, but I don't think it ever happened?

Meh, all that work searching for mods, when AMK looks like what I should go with. I think I passed it over before since I thought it was Russian only or something.

Does AMK increase weapon fire damage? I tried playing Stalker a while back but got fed up with the unrealistic damage.

russo, the only guy who's working on it, is still polishing the next version, which according to him (and with reasons to believe in his words) will surpass anything so far in terms of content and new features, but I believe that the next version of ABC Inferno, from what I know of it, will be less... let's say... less "chaotic" than AMK is, I.E a little less of a "sandbox" of messy events occurring everywhere (which I absolutely adore).

So it might please the players around who feel more comfortable with a "set path" and a minimum amount of randomization, rather than almost only random events and just a minimum of scripted events (that's AMK, but that's not to say that AMK is "broken", in fact it's the most stable mod I've seen so far, I've reached the Nuclear Reactor with that mod without a single CTD).

My copy should arrive from GoGamer in the next couple of days. I'm wondering -- is it worth playing the game for a bit without any mods or should i Just mod it up from the gitgo?

With the 1.0005 patch none of the mods work, so I'm playing through it again with no mods - Its still an awesome game! Its looks amazing maxed out with my 8800GTS (G92)

Patches for the game are retroactive and I need only install the latest patch to be updated, right?

Actually, I think you need to install them all, if I remember right. I seem to remember being annoyed by having to download all of the patches in order to get the most current version.

Ok, so it looks like 1.0005 is retroactive and you can run it on a base install without problems.

In fact, based on my experience, that's the route to take.

I installed the game last night and started playing. All was well at first, but then the game began to slow down terribly, like real 5fps nightmarishly slow performance. I had installed patch 1.0001, then .0003 then .0005. The game would run fine just after I started but without fail, within a few moments, the fps would plummet and the game would be like a slideshow. If I tried to use items in my inventory, the game would crash to desktop.

I uninstalled, reinstalled, patched just to 1.0005 and haven't encountered the problems since. Game has been running great since. Going to try and make some more progress tonight. The ambiance and stuff is pretty cool. The story is typically dorky and campy like most video games these days, but I'm into the whole thing in terms of concept and setting.

Not bad for $9.
