I loaded this up last night. I only played about 5min. 1680x1050, high graphic settings. It looks odd. I dont know if its from all the grass and shrubbery but looks... hazy like? Hard to explain. I know the game is older, but so was FEAR and that game looked awesome.

Is there something wrong with my settings? Is this what its suppose to look like?

The washed out look was a constant topic after the game was released. I got used to it...but then I never completed the game. The constant hassle of having to restore your health in one manner or another all the while being shot at - which the AI wasn't subjected to - was just too frustrating for me. I don't mind a challenge ... but when it becomes a hassle the "fun" of playing the game stops. At least for me.

Nothing is wrong with your settings. It's just their game engine. If the headbob bothers you there are mods to remove it.

Clear sky is a bit cleaner (HL2) looking.

Stalker has a very, very, very old engine, because it was in production from like ten years ago, and even though they've added quite about every possible effects directX has to offer, it still has that washed out look, of a very old game.

I don't think it's anything to do with the age of the engine. It's more a fact that the graphical design tries to capture what a post apocalyptic wasteland would look like.

@OP, you should look at the outdoor parts of FEAR. It's ugly like hell. Just try staring outside the heli during insertion.

Yeah, there is a weird film damage thing going on when you are near a radioactive field (which are all over the place). I believe that is what you are talking about.

lol yea i dont know what you guys are trying to say about it's an old engine and such. The washed out look is as katank has said it. It is the artistic style of the game and it does it pretty well. It gives everything a desolated look and it is not a short coming of the engine. Obviously if Stalker looked like WoW or something like that there would truly be an element missing.

Definitely about the atmosphere. If you check the Priboi mod, they brought back all the green and everything looks much better (makes sense also, the Priboi story is a sequel, starting after the destruction of the monolith).

Others are right also. Float32 improves the graphics as well. The engine is old indeed.

Its probably that you started in the rain/fog effect? I remember it being hazy and foggy when it was raining or there was a storm - you couldnt see very far into the distance. (which was more days than not). However, the game was quite pretty on the rare days when the sun was shining - you could also see a much farther distance on the clear days. I remember playing & wishing the darn rain would clear up so i could see the bad guys better.

Hmm, I might be interested in getting back into Stalker SoC, too. Anyone got a list of the must-haves? I like the Weather Overhaul description, and I keep hearing about FLOAT32, but I was thinking stuff that fixed the gameplay, too.

There's the Bardak fix attempt for 1.004 version, but works with the russian version only as I've heard. You could try the ZRP (zone reclamation project), it should include the Bardak... and I believe there is a mod for the english version as well. These two are fixing some game play bugs.

Nice mods: AMK(russian only, english mod will be available this summer maybe), Oblivion, Priboi
