Stalker Lost alpha directors cut

i remember trying lost alpha a couple years back, and it didn't run - surprise!

i've owned all 3 games of the stalker series, and they have never worked properly. i'm already jumping through hoops to do the install on this one, first get the build, then patch it, then re-patch it ..hey guys, how about you make a new build? but nooo.

i'll let you know if it works.

doesnt work. once 1.400 is installed, it cannot find a file (in plain sight in the main folder) and the app doesnt launch.

honestly, i'm done bothering with pc games which require me days of googling "how to fix", patch notes which say "just click and run" when it doesnt work .. i've had my fill with Clear Sky and Call Of Pripyat.

no, i dont have problems reading. do you?

1) i patched the lost alpha download to 1.300; this resulted in the game deleting the .exe and not replacing it.
2) i installed 1.400 after 1.300 and ... well, if you didn't read it the first time, you probably won't read it again.

I played this a while back when I ran through all three games and it was extremely fun. I'm glad to see it's finally going to be finished.

Also, if you ever wanted to just play through the games normally, look for the Complete mods (SoC is just called Stalker Complete 2009). If I remember correctly 2009 and CoP Complete actually fix a lot of the bugs in the game, but Clear Sky Complete just improves the graphics and adds dynamic weather. It didn't fix any bugs that I'm aware of because I lost a save file with 7 hours after I got stuck in a loading zone that crashed upon entering which corrupted my save file.

I think I was one of the few who were able to finish all three games without any major issues, even though people complained about CS being broken to the point it was unplayable. I just remember God Rays brought the game to a screeching halt (and even on my system now I was still lagging with everything maxed out).

As a huge S.T.A.L.K.E.R. fan, I honestly didn't like Lost Alpha very much. Just because a level is large doesn't make it good. The underground labs have absolutely no character like ShoC did. They're just huge mazes of boring concrete blocks. Many of the above-ground structures have the same feel.

The quests can be inanely drawn out with the amount of distance to be covered - even in a car (which gets about .2 mpg apparently). And then there's that infamous Illuminati sequence that just...gah...why?

The swamps, which were haunting and gorgeous in Clear Sky, look terrible.

That said - I enjoyed it immensely for what it was, and appreciate the amount of dedication and effort it took to put this together. As such a huge fan of the series, it was a bit like a gift to be able to wander for days in that environment - - so much of which got cut from the releases. Even if a lot of it wasn't polished, you could see the vision and the enormity of scope that team was taking on way back in the early 2000's.

I know I sound like I'm contradicting myself in this post - but that's just what it is. I both loved and hated this thing.

when SoC released in 2006 I immediately bought it (possibly one of the last PC games bought from Gamestop) and I ran it on an Althlon XP machine. engine was kind of buggy, but I eventually finished it and I will always be a fan. i remember downloading the patches and crossing my fingers haha, but it did finally work out.

I will definitely check this out later.

btw. Call of Pripyat was great too (esp. with that desolation mod installed), but I hated Clear Sky. I wanted to explore and not be bothered every 5 minutes because bandits were attacking some camp I didn't care about. I never finished that game, did it ever get better?

I believe ClearSky Complete actually includes the community patch that fixes a bunch of bugs. Seems like in your case they may have missed one. 😉

I actually really like ClearSky. It's certainly not my favorite in the series, but I love the art direction and atmosphere - and some environments you don't get to play in any other game of the series. Plus, I find the story pretty fascinating, so understanding it's place as the prequel to ShoC makes it interesting to play in that context. But yeah - there are definitely some things, very annoying things. I never play the ending - as it's just...AWFUL, with the teleporting and what have you. Plus, there's some sort of sound bug that makes the teleport sound insanely loud. The first time I went through one with headphones it was so loud and piercing I ripped them off my head and grabbed my ears in pain. The pain lasted for hours....wth.

You could ignore the raids and it didn't really affect much once you pushed the bandits back into their little camp. You could also stay neutral between Freedom and Duty or pick one and obliterate the other. The story was actually pretty fun and I think it has a better single player experience than SoC. They did go in a weird direction with Clear Sky with the story, but it was still fun. I personally still love playing Clear Sky even with its major bugs.
