Now I know that the Dinnerware I have is cheap.......Cambridge/Stainless/China.

I paid about $70.00 for a service of 4 (it's 2 yrs old now). I have city Water and it's very decent and not rusty at all. I have a dishwasher and use liquid Cascade and have no steel items that I wash along with the dinnerware.

So why do the Butter knives have rusty spots on them?
Is it the Metal? Not real Stainless and just plated???

I'm just really curious why the butter knives have rust on them but no other utensil does.....

Here are the pics. Sorry for the nonCrop.

Yeah, those are probably cheap "stainless" knives.

The $5 set of steak knives that I got from Walmart ended up the same way after a few trips through the dishwasher. :(

Do you really have to ask? I mean they do say made in China right on them.

Hell you're lucky they aren't made out of lead.

Butter/table knife = more surface area to expose poor quality. This is why they don't use forks in batteries, they use knives/plates.

-edit-
did you know the weight in your knife is concrete?

oh, and what kind of butter knife has teeth??? Just chalk it up to cheap crap and hand wash those and make sure they are dry.

I believe that is from contact (probably in the sink or washer) to another type of metal.

What is so confusing? I assumed we're talking stainless steel flatware here, not fine silver.

And yeah - that weight you feel in the knife, that is concrete and not metal. I'm not posting from something I read on the intarweb but have seen/been through a few manufacturers of this stuff even on the higher end.

also, they rust easy if you soak them in water for too long before washing them. due to higher level of iron in the 'stainless china'

I have the same set except I got service 10 or 12, i don't remember ($70). I have a couple of those spots that I found were coming from leaving things in the sink- like within a few weeks of buying them. Once I stopped lettings silverware rest in the sink, I've had no problems since.

But it's stainless steel, you should not have any "rust" stains.
Not to this extreme....BUT.... think of gold at the bottom of the ocean for 300 years and finding a blemish on it after all the barnicales are cleaned off.

I'm just mad that they can place a "STAINLESS STEEL" stamp on this crap when it's not.
What's the Stainless content?....... 1%....... 10%?

So you've never bought any item that says MADE by/in China??
Ahhhh, you're the crowd that agrees with most in here to get your post count up just to post in a thread. I can understand that. But here my friend, you are wrong.

I'm sure you have many tools that were made in CHINA that you have not a "CLUE" about!

Did you let them rest against other metals for awhile? Sometimes I'd forget about a can left in the sink - I usually fill them with soapy water and let them soak after I've eaten the contents. Underneath, a ring of rust will be left on the stainless steel sink. It seems to have been formed on the can, but it just sticks to the sink. The only way I've found to really remove it entirely is with a mildly abrasive soap, like Bar Keeper's Friend or Bon-Ami.
(Incidentally, this sort of thing can be great for cleaning fiberglass or plastic showers.)

I've had some Martha Stewart brand flatware for at least two years now, and it's not showing any signs of corrosion. I don't know what variety of stainless steel it is, but it's quite magnetic. The flatware my parents have is also magnetic and marked as stainless. It's not corroded either, yet it's got to be at least 20 years old.

Oddly enough, some uber-cheap Kmart-brand stainless steel measuring cups I have aren't magnetic.

Chinese components - the Chinese can make perfectly good stuff. It's just that we generally turn to China when we want "cheap." They just don't seem to have as much of a problem with lopping off corners to meet pricing demands as the government-and-lawyer-regulated industries in the US do. As the saying goes, "You get what you pay for."
