How much fencing do you have? Does it need any prep work? Power washing? And/or is it included in quote?

don't power wash it before you stain it. use a cleaner. Behr makes a decent one. personally i recommend doing it with paint pads. you can buy them on the end of a 4' stick at any major hardware retailer:

here's the cleaner I used on my deck. We applied it liberally and used a couple of cheap sponge mops from the dollar store to scrub with.

Behr cleaner

Look into Consumer Reports about stains and water proofers. I helped a friend stained/water proof a wood deck 2 years straight only to see it all destroyed by the next year. Then, CR came out with a report on the products and we had been using the lowest rated product (Thompson's). We could have saved countless frustrating hours and some expense if that CR article had come out BEFORE we did all of that work.

In other words, expect to pay $830-$900 next year if you don't take the few minutes to go to the library and read an article.

Could you give us a hint of who the top products were?

i would say about 400 feet of fencing. the first time was 5 years ago, and the second time was last summer. i did not prep it just rolled on a new coat and it looks great.

Sorry, I don't remember off the top of my head. I'll try to remember to look for it tonight. It was several years ago that I read it.

Once you stain it you will be staining it forever.

If it's cedar, locust or PT I'd let it silver (and probably wash the bird doo off of it every now and then . . . )

You know Behr wasn't a big player in field 3 years ago. I used DEFY semi last year and can't say I thrilled about how it's held up on the horizontal surfaces.

I fully agree with the Behr stain being last. Ours barely lasted one summer. This year it's terrible. I'll have to stain again next year. :|

I used DEFY epoxy semi and I too am not thrilled with the way the it's held up on horizontal surfaces. I'm almost tempted to go with an opaque on the horizontals and a semi on the verticals. So many people recommended DEFY too.

Did you use the Behr from HD, as shown in that link? That is the exact kind we used.
