Stage 3 of 3 Loop

for whatever reason I have no restore points, even though I created many. I have been to
many different forums and have found nothing that works. It looks like the only solution
is a reinstall. Fortunately I have been a Microsoft user for decades and I know to keep anything of
importance uploaded, copied onto another machine, etc. Thank you Open Office, Google Docs, Picasa, Foxmarks, etc.
It sure is a pain, though, to spend the evening reinstalling apps and fave software. I had my
machine running real smooth.
What I don't understand is why now? This nonsense hit big time back in February. Why now in July?

I assume you are talking about being stuck in a loop after applying an update in Vista?

One thing i'd suggest checking is your HDD.

I often see Windows updates or Service Pack installs crap out due to dying HDDs (not saying this is the case; just an observation for some cases).

I had the same thing happen to me not that long ago actually, but i was able restore point back to a previous date (via Vista disc), & then re-apply all the needed updates again, this time w/o issue.

Yes, that is to what I was referring. I did see some mention of hard drives causing some problem. I had a number of restore points, but when I tried to repair there were no restore points listed. I just did an install. I did not install any of the rec'd updates dated July 8. I think one of those borked my machine. I have talked to people who had the same probs in just the last day or two. I haven't run diagnostics on the HDD, but I guess I will.
