"Staffing" Firms?

A local staffing firm got ahold of my resume through monster or hotjobs. The first time they called me I returned their call them right the same day and the "position" was canceled. The second time I went in for an interview about a another position that was potentially open but nothing became of it. The third time they called me it was for a rollout project available but it was too short term. Yesterday they left me a message about another position that "I may be interested in" but when a called back only a few hours later it was "placed on hold". Are they just screwing me around or what? Is this some sort of stratege that hiring firms use to make you happy to get an actual offer if one finally does come around?

I never liked any of the staffing firms that contacted me about potential employment when I was looking for work. I ended up finding my job on my own.

Yea but in this economy ANY job is better than no job.

I just Grad. college and I have nothing but bills coming in and NO job offers.

I affectionately refer to them as "pimps".


They love you only when you are working for them. They try to get the highest pay-out from the contracted company, while trying to sell you on their lowest rate (your paycheck).


Personally, I hate them. But IBM, Cisco, Nortel, and Glaxo (in NC) will not deal with you individually on a contractual basis.


Do not mistake them as being your friend. They want your skills to pay for their fun. The account managers (recruiters) are less trained and less experienced than ever before. They try to make their margins by throwing anything and everything at a job and seeing their is the one to get it. For one job, I had 16 different firms asking me to let them use my resume in applying for it. The pay scale was huge, as much as $10 in difference for what the job would pay.


Manpower takes the least amount out of the contract. And they don't try to be your best friend. They are in the business to get business and they let you know that up front. That being said, just don't have one firm represetn you in a job opportunity. 2 or 3 pimps are just fine, no matter what they may say.

Ah yes, the college bills. It's rather amusing because when the college/credit firm calls me to ask about collecting what I owe I have to try not to laugh when they ask when a payment can be expected. I say when I get a full time job, and then they ask if I can make a payment of more than I have by a certain date. I say no and then they ask how much I can afford to pay and I say $5... well not really but that is really what I could afford. I just stopped returning their calls even though they don't say who they are, I know it's them.

No.. They aren't jerking you around. They contacted you initially thinking that you might be a fit with this certain position and after they sent over your resume, you probably weren't right for the job, so they are telling you nicely that you aren't qualified or what the employer wants.

This happens all the time. I'll think that a candidate will be a great fit, but for some reason, the employer shoots down a resume. Sometimes, it's miscommunication. I may be under the impression that they are looking for someone with 1-2 years experience when they really wanted 4-5. I try to break it nicely to the potential candidate because another position might come along that they would be a good "fit" for.

BTW.. I'm a Pimp.. Flesh Peddler.. Headhunter.. Whatever you want to call it. ;)

Eh, i went in for a barely above min wage job offer for data entry (typing all day long) and they gave me a database admin job based on my resume with pay about equal to a 2 year degree (which i dont have because im only halfway through a 4 year CompE degree) I find that around here they post crappy jobs in the paper and then tell me about stuff that wasn't posted when they see my resume. However i did see the bill they sent to my company once and realized they get 35 cents for every dollar i make. Oh well i dont really care, just working my way through school and was happy to be employed at the same level as people i know who took the 2 year degree approach. Just my 2 cents.

the problem sounds to me, to be that you are in the market for a job that has a big surplus of workers, compared to the jobs available. so when a job does come up it gets filled fast. with the job market and economy the way it is this is not uncommon.

I got my current job from a staffing company. I worked for the company for 3 months, got hired on as a salaried employee here and have been here over two years. It worked out very well for me.

The company would call and ask if it was ok to submit my resume for this job or that job, and i'd tell them yeah go ahead or no I'm not interested. It took about 3 weeks or so, but i finally got a good job.

Yep.. That's one of the things that I like least about the job. I find it kind of sleazy like selling used cars or selling insurance to my friends. That's how you create leads though unfortunately.

BTW.. I don't work in staffing. I don't cover local factory jobs, secretarial stuff or temp jobs. It's mainly placing executives.

I had the same experience! This one they were going to send me to Hawaii for some project upgrading military computers...it was cancelled 12 hours before I was to leave!!!:|

What do you mean pumping you for information? I think they have done this to me by saying to call back about a job and then telling me it was "put on hold" but asking what was going on with me. Are they trying to find if how tough of a bind I am in?
