Stable system, except...

Ok, so a little while ago I picked up a CHEAP Abit AV8 and 3200+ winnie, and it ran just peachy at 2.4 ghz w/333 divider with 1.5V to processor, prime and memtest stable, all that jazz.

My problem comes when I plug in the power supply. It gives me a surge that f*cks with the mobo and causes it to fail out of booting when it is applying voltage settings to the mobo. Occassionally this is strong enough to cause the lights to dim and my ups to howl. This is painful, because the only way to bring it back up is to clear the cmos, other wise every time I boot it if fails to post and then begins to beep. This power supply is a true blue Antec 350, which may be, I admit, a little light for the task (6800 unlocked, winnie @ 2.4, 2 opticals, 2 hds and 3 fans).

Does anybody here have any experience with this sort of behavior? I have flashed with some different bios's thinking that it was a bios issue, but, thank you ABIT, have only a larger headache as now it is an oc'ing POS. I am going to go back to the original bios that I recieved it with. Also, I will be putting my spare thermaltake pure power 480 in there to see if that exhibits the same behaviour.

Thanks is advance for any help you might have!

Just so I understand correctly, you are trying to run a Abit AV8 with a 3200+ winnie, with a geforce 6800, 2 opticals, 2 hds and 3 fans and you are trying to overclock with a Antec 350W PSU? That's no where near enough power. Is it a dual or single rail? What is the Amperage on the 12v rail?

I have a Asus A8N SLI with a 3200+ Venice, 1 6600GT , 1 NEC DVD Burner, 1 hd, 3 fans, and my cpu is overclocked to 2.75ghz and my Antec TruePower 430W dual rails 17A on each rail and my system was fine running just prime95 and memtest but when I tried running 3dmark05 or playing a game, the PSU buckled causing my system to shut off.

I ordered a Rosewill 550W which is a single rail with 35A on the 12v rail.

How is that thermaltake 480W doing? That should work fine.

Oh, it has a mighty 16A on the 12V rail 😛

The real reason it is in use is that GF LOVES the blue light coming out the back...

The comp has been rock stable all the time that it is on (looping 3dMarks, etc to stress the newly unlocked 6800), it is just the funky sh!t that goes on when it is unplugged and plugged back in wasted 3 hours of my life last night and I was wondering if it was something this board/combo had issues with. My Antec 480W makes my ups scream everytime that I plug it in, too, but at least it is actually plugged directly into the reserve side of it, unlike the GF who just has a surge protector on hers.

The thermaltake is going in tonight, hopefully that cures all my problems.

Thanks for your input,
Nat

I wish I could be more help but I don't know the Abit boards all too well. You are sure your UPS is still 100% operational and not damaged in any way?

Her comp is not plugged into the UPS, but into the wall on the same circut as my computer, and the power draw is enough when I plug it in w/PS "on" or turn it on after plugging it in that it can cause my UPS to chirp and the lights to dim. The light in the PS flashes and the mobo springs to life. Then, that subsides and after that when I hit the power button, the case comes alive for an instant, then goes dark, and then powers up again but then I get the beep chorus to go along with my frustration non-happy dance...

At this point, no one seems to know Abit to well anymore, I was just feeling sentimental about my NF7-S and thought I would try them again. Really though, thanks for the input, anyting is very appreciated 🙂

This dosen't sound too good to me!

Well, putting my thermaltake in there did the trick, no more weird surging! Those newest bios revisions suck from Abit, by the way... 🙂
