Stable, not quirky motherboard choice

I've posted before about my P5Q-E. Its stable enough but super quirky with temperature reporting and fans.

Even with the latest bios, temps can be reported from normal to 250+ or -60.

Then the exhaust fan started reporting as 0 RPM. After replacing the fan, the problem returned and now I will sometimes see speeds of 14,000+ being reported for the front intake fans.

Worst is now when the system awakes, fan speeds are reduced sometimes. I have to open up speed fan, change all the fan speeds to 0, then change to 100 in order to get everything running ok.

Its becoming a real hastle so I want to change motherboards, no ASUS. Will not be doing Crossfire but I need something that is rock solid. I need lots of USB ports. Some boards just don't have enough and don't come with a USB slot adapter for extra ports. For now, I want to keep my DDR2 memory as well. I know the X48 is overkill but if it will be more stable, I don't mind paying the extra.

I have been considering:

MSI P45 Platinum
GIGABYTE GA-X48-DS5

Anything else I should be considering?

Before dropping a ton of money on a soon-to-be-outdated chipset, have you thought about waiting for Nehalem which is due out later this year?

Yes, thought about it. but, will that bring another round of imature bioses and boards and initial high prices?

I am always in that quandry as there is always the new technology due out in a month or two that will trump what I have.

IF you can find a Gigabyte X48 DS5 board, please let me know. They seem unavailable.

I just finished installing my asrock p45 ts-r last night. It's stable, and has most basic features. It won't break your budget. I've had more luck with some off brands like asrock than asus, abit, etc.

I have both an older p35 board (Asus p5ke) and an eVGA 680i. Using XP I never experienced any problems -- in regards to monitoring temps, fan controls and especially resuming from sleep. On Vista it's a crapshoot so not sure if you are using Vista and it makes your board 'feel" quirky. If you are on XP, them my reply is moot. I know for sure that when on Vista my comp goes in sleep mode and then I bring it back the fans do exactly what you described.

Anyhow of all the boards I have ever owned I have NEVER had one more stable, simpler to use, set up, overclock than my Asus P35 P5KE. It just works -- period. I actually thought of going to something exotic like a newer X48 or the 790i ultra but the way I look at it the more options and tweaking you can do on these boards, the more trouble they are. The 680i series are ok? but talk about quirky as well, especially in my case if I use it with a quad core.

It's harder in my opinion to try and set one up perfectly when you have 20000 settings and choices that can each adversely affect the stability and ease of use of the board.

I wish I could recommend something in the lines of the P45 or newer.

I actually have the same issue with the fan speed reporting not working for all fans (detecting as 0RPM) on my P5Q Pro. The fans themselves are spinning correctly. Anyways, not really enough of a bother to cause me to want to switch boards.

I first had a problem with the fan speed not responding and yes its really no problem but now I find that the fan speeds are sometimes reduced for no reason. Getting into Speed Fan and stopping the fans and then bringing them back to speed gets them going again. You can tell they really weren't spinning properly by the sound once they get going again.

If you want absolutely stability, use INTEL board. I'm really tired of all ASUS, Gigabyte, ABIT, MSI, etc. All of these non INTEL motherbaord has some quirky things down the road.

This is solid advice if you don't plan on overclocking at all.
