Putting together a machine for a friend with a Barton CPU.

Looking for a board < $100 that is very stable. Probably no overclocking, no raid.

Recommendations please.

Look at EPoX 8rda+...around $90 from Newegg. No raid onboard, excellent onboard sound, onboard LAN, USB 2.0. Best of all, it's NForce2. The fastest, most stable chipset for Athlon. There are other great NForce2 boards, but this one is the least expensive and best bang for buck.

I just got one of these AN35N-Ultra for $71 shipped. So far it has ben an excellent board, not as nice as my NF7-S ver 2.0 but is very stable and fast!

I've been leaning toward the Epox mobo but I've read some comments that their quality has gone down lately. Any truth?

From a pure stability standpoint am I better off spending a little more money for another mobo, Abit, ASUS ?

Less than $100, no OC,... hmmm ECS L7S7A2 about $55, DFI NFII Ultra-AL about $85 or Asus A7N8X about $95.

The Epox 8RDA that I got in January of this year has not had any major problems, but it does seem to be picky about memory. It hated my Kingston ValueRAM (that stuff was crap anyway), but it works quite well with the new Corsair XMS PC3200 that I just got. I've also heard that it works well with "Buffalo" RAM, which is significantly cheaper than my Corsair stuff. :)

Save yourself a few bucks towards your next upgrade and grab a Shuttle AN35N Ultra 400. Rock solid Nforce 2 chipset, onboard 6 channel audio, onboard LAN, lots of overclocking options in the BIOS (in case you change your mind down the road) and full support for all current AMD CPU's. I have been very happy with mine, and if and when the XP2500 Bartons drop to under $75 or so, I just may have to try one out. My XP1700+ "B" at a little over 2.0 Ghz seems plenty for now though. (Especially for the $41 I paid for it)
