I ordered a slew of parts from newegg, xoxide, and zipzoomfly to finally complete a computer. But the parts aren't here yet and won't be till webnesday-friday. I'm new at oc'n and i know i picked good parts for oc'n, but when you overclock how can you tell your system is getting unstable. I have tried oc'n my current computer, but i can't tell if i'm going overboard or what. When you overclock do you notice irratic behavior to let you know you're going overboard?

I don't plan to oc right when i get my parts, but adventually down the road i will be willing to try. This is my first build and i'm very excited. I'm not mechanically inclined, but i'm not the best at computer software, but thats why you try things. Any advice would be great.

The parts i'm waiting for:
amd 3700 (san diego)
dri nf4 sli lp-dr
geil 2x512 pc3200 (tccd)
bfg 7800gtx
seasonic s12 600watt
2x36.7gig raptors
swiftech heatsink w/arctic silver5
antec p180 case

With my current board instability shows up first as memory errors in memtest, or prime 95 failures. At faster clocks or lower voltage or whatever, it will start spontaneously rebooting while loading Windows, or when working with software after Windows loads.

At extreme levels of overclocking it collapses into an incredibly small singularity whose intense gravitational density sucks in

A spontaneous boot at Windows loading is usually a memory error. I tested my memory and every time I went too far or too tight with my timings I would get BSOD's and then spontaneous rebooting the more I went past the stability point. S&M definitely puts a hurting on the processor as far as heat production. It produces way more heat than dual Prime95 for me (X2 system).
