St. Johns Church Re-opens in Baghdad

Michael Yon - Thanks and Praise - Pic of cross being erected on top of church.

A Muslim man had invited the American soldiers from ?Chosen? Company 2-12 Cavalry to the church, where I videotaped as Muslims and Christians worked and rejoiced at the reopening of St John?s, an occasion all viewed as a sign of hope.

The Iraqis asked me to convey a message of thanks to the American people. ? Thank you, thank you,? the people were saying. One man said, ?Thank you for peace.? Another man, a Muslim, said ?All the people, all the people in Iraq, Muslim and Christian, is brother.? The men and women were holding bells, and for the first time in memory freedom rang over the ravaged land between two rivers. (Videotape to follow.)

Michael Yon does not receive funding or financial support from Fox News, or from any network, movie, book or television deals at this time. He is entirely reader supported. He relies on his readers to help him replace his equipment and cover his expenses so that he may remain in Iraq and bring you the stories of our soldiers. If you value his work, please consider supporting his mission.

Michael Yon is probably my favorite reporter dealing with the Iraq War. He actually gets out and about with the troops (in combat situations too) and talks with Iraqis. The writing in his dispatches are also top notch and he gets some fantastic photos.

Positive news, such as this, will not be received well here.

Go Iraq. Keep hope alive.

46,000 returned to Iraq last month

BAGHDAD - Declining violence has prompted Iraqi refugees to pack up and return home, with the government on Wednesday claiming 46,030 people crossed back over the borders in October alone.

Yes I saw that on Olbermann in last night's news. Apparently the Saudis cut off Iraqi immigration and thousands were forced to return. Now the displaced and homeless in Iraq has grown by some huge amount in the millions. So I suspect that what you Pollyannas call good news is really bad.

You are blinded by seeing what you want to see, not what is there to see.

I, on the other hand, saw in the raising of the cross by interfaith people, a genuine sign of hope and my wish for Iraq to keep hope alive was real. It remains real even if it should turn out that the basement where the cross was stored simply had to be cleared for room to house the returning homeless.

In fact my hope and faith in the people of Iraq would have precluded me from bombing them as a pretext for 9/11. You seek hope from war and brutality and I seek it in love and piece.

You lost me at Olbermann.

Seriously, I'm sure the truth is somewhere in between. The violence in Iraq, and Baghdad, specifically has dropped significantly. Now the just need to sustain that and work on building the infrastructure up along with solving the thorniest of the political problems.

Quoting Olbermann is about as useful as quoting Limbaugh. Olberman has never let the facts get in the way of his story or opinion.

He shoulda stuck to sports (and the other guy was funnier).

Here we go again with the "how great things are in Iraq'" b.s. threads.
I must have seen a hundred of these here.
If all the great things in these threads had really happened, Iraq would be the garden spot of the world by now.

Reuters:

Aid workers estimate that at least 2.2 million Iraqis have fled to other countries, mainly Syria and Jordan. Both those countries have tightened migration rules for Iraqis.

The Iraqi Red Crescent has reported that the number of people displaced within Iraq has grown steadily for almost two years, reaching 2.3 million at the end of September.
====================

Olbermann is far and away the best thing on television so I have to disregard your negative opinion as to his news accuracy and particularly since it is only an opinion that flies in the face of how wonderful he is to watch. He is the only person I see on TV who has much of anything of value to say. Clearly your bias has clouded your vision, no, unlike myself who can see quite clearly? 😉

No one is claiming that things are great...however, there are numerous threads discussing POSITIVE DEVELOPMENTS that somehow manage to not make the evening news, largely because the media is in the business of selling doom and gloom...not hope.

Why does it offend you so that there are some encouraging signs in Iraq? I would think those most opposed to the war in Iraq would be quite happy to hear such stories, because it accelerates their cause for withdrawal.

We aren't talking about "great" things...we are talking about positive developments, cultural shifts, and signs of stability that are a shift from the chaos of the past few years.

Then again, I have to remember who I am responding to here.

Yes but are we talking about any real hope or the pipe dreams of warmongers looking to postpone our withdrawal from Iraq until evolution turns Iraqis into angels?

You want to see some good news from Iraq? Check the Iraqi papers circa 2000-2001.
Yeah. It was all kites and butterflies in Iraq prior to the US invasion. Even 99% of Iraqis voted "Yes" for the sole candidate for president.

Ain't that the truth.

Doesn't take much to lose you two.

I'm sorry Moonbeam, we're just so full of SELF-HATE that we lack the UNDERSTANDING to operate on your level. Won't you help us with your LOVE?

Of course. But you don't need love for better "understanding", you just need much bigger feet. So when you put them in your cavernous mouths, suck, and they're bound to grow to fill the vacuum.

I think war is growing tiresome for everyone but the insane.

I think the pro-war crowd is grasping at the insignificant threads of a sweater that will never unravel until the admin and the "go war go" crowd admits fault.

OPie, you have kids, how are you going to answer their questions about your support of over zealous tax loans that they have to pay off? Oh wait, thats right, i already asked you this and you had nothing to say. Typical myopia of the right.

Oh jebus! The so called "left wing, libural, MSM" sold the war to the populace. No questions, they beat the war drum for the dumb-dumb in the white house. Why werent you complaining about their tactics then? Maybe they recognized that they fucked up by not questioning the admin and selling the populace on the war, and now they want to present a real story of the situation? Get real. Your "go war go" attitude is not helping ANYONE. Not a single solitary individual benefits from your cheerleading for war. Please, pull your head out of your ass and be objective for *once*. I know you have never done this, but for the sake of the country, just try. Please.

Most things I put in my mouth and suck tend to grow bigger to fill the vacuum. 😉
