From Hollins's mouth:

"For several years the private sector has attempted to secure a safe haven for copyrighted digital products, unfortunately with little to show for its efforts. The result has been an absence of robust, ubiquitous protections of digital media which has lead to a lack of content on the Internet and over the airwaves. And who has suffered the most? Consumers, as they are denied access to high quality digital content in the home."

Who the fsck voted this clown in?

Dude, Ted's been behind this all along. He and Hollings are the original authors.

I know this. If either Wyden or Smith vote for this Big Brother law, I will personally start the grassroots campaign for their recalls.

/edit: a good website for info on how you can contact your Senators is
http://www.stoppoliceware.org/
This is far, far worse than the DMCA, folks. If this bill passes, your PC will become (in the words of an Intel VP while testifying before a Senate committee), nothing more than an expensive DVD player.

You gotta have a republican and democrat sponser to have a bill even looked at. I love how they try to pass it off as "Consumer Broadband and Digital Television Promotion Act". What ever this absolutely hurts consumers.

Hollins is 80 years old and has been senator since 1966. Can anybody say overripe (and senile)?

His biggest financial contributor, interestingly, is FedEx. The next top donors are all media and telecomm firms.

WTF?? :| I thought the SSSCA died months ago.

This garbage had better get slapped down hard. Everyone snail-mail your senators/reps and let them know how they feel. You can find your senators here and your representatives here. Here is a sample text you can use in your letter (ripped from stoppoliceware.org):

Dear Rep. / Sen. Lastname:

I'm writing to urge you to reject the proposed Consumer Broadband and Digital Television Promotion Act (CBDTPA). Under the guise of enforcing copyrights, this bill would force all new personal computers and digital electronic devices sold in the United States to have government "policeware" built-in.

This policeware would control how computers handle certain types of files and media formats. Many of the activities that your constituents now take for granted would be prevented by this proposed technology. This bill is an assault on the public's fair use rights and the free flow of information.

Even more disturbing, anyone who disabled this policeware on their own personal computers would be committing a federal felony and would face five years in prison and $500,000 in fines!

We all grew up hearing about the heavy restrictions placed on typewriters and copy machines by the Soviet Union while they struggled to repress their citizens. It's shameful that we're seeing similar controls being proposed on technology today, here in the United States.

Ultimately, the CBDTPA threatens to turn many thousands of innocent Americans into federal felons, and will cause great hardship to the computer and technology industries.

I urge you to reject this proposed bill.

Sincerely,
My Name
My Address

My american nerd/geek-brothers (and sisters)!

Fight this thing! Write to your representatives! Make sure they understand what this thing means to you and to the IT-industry! I myself cannot do so, because I'm not a citizen of your country. But I urge you to fight! THIS LAW MUST NOT PASS

Of course DiFei is in on it... She is from California, and they are really urging for this there.

The buck stops.... um, somewhere over there...

Take a step back before you all start your writing campaigns.

The BDTPA is a revised version of the SSSCA. Hollins (and many of his cohorts, it seems) believe they've addressed most of the objectionable parts of the SSSCA. Of course, the BDTPA is still completely unacceptable, but if you write to your congressman saying that "it will deny fair use", they'll throw your letter in the garbage because they think the BDTPA addresses fair use.

You need to plan your attack from a different perspective. Attack the BDTPA on the basis that it will increase the cost of consumer electronics, make it more difficult for consumers to use these devices for fair uses purposes, and involve government in something that can be worked out by the private sector. Saying "many of the activities that your constituents now take for granted would be prevented by this proposed technology" will only encourage the senators to support this bill because they've been brainwashed by the media companies that "many of the activities" of their constituents (read: file sharing) hurt them badly.

The biggest fallacy is that this legislation is pitched as a pro-consumer advance...that if we don't lock down people's PCs (what am I saying? if we don't lock down EVERYTHING digital), there will not be any more digital content because copyright holders will never see a dime. Bah. This isn't the first time that Hollywood has fought technology, only to find out later they profit from its fair use. Remember when VCRs came out? The MPAA fought the devices and took their fights all the way to the Supreme Court. It just so happens that the VCR provided the movie studios with an incredible source of income from video rental/sales. Heck, for more than a few titles, more money is made on the video than on the theatrical release.

A nice article at Wired.com

I don't know how else to describe this bill but as sheer madness. It gives me about the same unreal feeling as when that one guy had to face rather high fees for running a distributed client on a bunch of PCs.

If this bill passes, it will mean the end of a era in which information technology flourished. It will mean the end of one of the US's strengths.

And that all for a few lousy movies and songs.

Please, someone pinch me...

Oh god this pisses me off to no end. If by some chance this passes, I will be going off to DC for the ralley that will surely take place.

I don't think (or I hope not) that it will pass. Who in their right mind would pass such a bill?

Edit: I just wrote my senators and representatives.

Its important to use snail mail. If you use snail mail they infer that you realy apreciate the issue. It is also more statisticly indicative that a great number of people also feel the same way.

Unfortunatly informed voters seem to be such a minority i wonder if our opinions matter to them at all. At least I do my part, even if few others do. Im
