ssid disable: not visible long range, visible short range.

when i disable the ssid, the network name doesnt show up long range, once i move it closer to the router it became visible again. is this normal?
 
no...I would use Netstumbler to see if it's really broadcasting (as it ignores your client utilities)

You could also (if your card supports it) try Aeropeek, but that program is craptastic at its best. Think they have a demo
